Villa have already signed 8 players. They are looking stronger for sure and let's face it they are our current direct rivals
Don’t agree. They’ve lost one of their best players already in Douglas Luiz and another regular starter appears to be off in the shape of Diaby. They’re shuffling the pack because of PSR challenges. They might improve further but I don’t think their ins and outs up to this point have made them stronger.

Who have they signed?
Pretty sure a fair few are downgrades or psr cheats?
They’ve signed Barkley from Luton, a couple of youngster from Juventus (one is the English player whose name escapes me). They’ve signed Dobbin from Everton in a weird PSR swap. They’ve signed Philogene from Hull and Maatsen from Chelsea.

There are probably some more that I can’t remember though.

Maatsen is definitely an upgrade for Villa.

Jury is still out on whether they have vastly improved their team other than that. But I wouldn’t say there were weaker.

Maatsen could be a very decent buy. There’s nothing else there that I think improves them. The two Juve youngsters will provide them with depth but they were thrown in as part of the Luiz deal because Juve didn’t value them. Barkley looked good in a relegated team but he’ll be a bit part player for them. Archer didn’t even manage to look good in a relegated team. Philogene is unproven at the top level and looks like a club signing/piece of opportunism rather than someone Emery particularly wants.

Remember when we got two juve players because they didn’t rate them.

Villa are net positive in strengthening this summer

But we specifically targeted those players based on our DoF having prior knowledge of them having worked at Juve. They weren’t thrown in as makeweights in a deal which sent arguably our best player the other way.

Still they didn’t rate them especially Kulusevski and we got them and turned out okay so it might for Villa too ( Iling-Junior is good imo ).

Iling-Junior definitely has potential to work out great for them, but I’d be very surprised if it was this season. The other lad is relatively unknown after a season with Frosinone, and is yet to get any international recognition.

I must've completely missed them going back in for Archer in what is quite blatantly getting the CT numbers back up alongside Philogene.

They have an awful lot of left sided midfielders mind including Ramsay who's tendency is to drift left so if they are after Lo Celso/Felix then one wonders how Emery will juggle this squad.

It was part of the deal when they sold Archer to Sheff Utd. If United had stayed up they would have kept him and paid an additional fee to Villa, but when they got relegated it triggered an automatic buy-back for a slightly lower fee..

Our signing of Gray is better than anything Villa have done.

We haven't weakened our midfield either (Luiz leaving)
They've lost 49 goal involvements from last season in all comps. I know they will have other players but that's a lot of goals to lose, particularly the 19 from diaby and 20 from luiz

Edit - I like watkins but they can't rely on him to have such a freakishly good season. I'd be shocked if he gets near the 40 goal involvements from last season again

So far, Aston Villa have a stronger squad than last season but a weaker first eleven. They've qualified for Champions League football but still sold the same players they risked losing without it and not yet signed sufficient quality to improve on last year.
