Villa have just re-signed Jadon Philogene from Hull....another good signing for them! (n) With the sell on fee they inserted when they sold him to Hull a year ago it means they've only paid £13.5M
Yeah, but they are selling Diaby.

In all honesty, no team in the PL has yet done any business that I am jealous of or where I think we are being left behind.

I'm not depressed. Im aware they are a direct competitor so I'm viewing it as a spurs fan who wants to challenge for trophies and seeing a direct competitor make a series of signings I think are pretty good.
Fair enough. Still seems way OTT to suggest that Yoro and Zirkzee (neither of whom i'd heard of until they were linked with United) signings are "very worrying for our ambitions".

they'll likely get Ugarte and another CB. They only finished 6 points behind us and won the fa cup. Think if we actually wanna compete we need to do a bit better. Don't think it's OTT personally

Is he really that good? His defensive stats are underwhelming to say the least. Fair enough he is only 18 but the money they paid is crazy.

Stats belie his talent - certainly on the eye.

But still needs nurturing in a stable environment which i'm not sure Utd will necessarily provide coupled with the immediate expectation but we'll soon see how he fares.

And you with the money they've paid, you'd think he's going to be thrown straight in at the deep end, which is a lot of pressure on an 18, especially in such a position of importance.
A couple of early mistakes could have a massively detrimental effect on the kid.

How much first team football has he played so far?

So what about our potential signings if you're speaking about United hypotheticals? Gray, Bergvall has joined up with the group, add to that the likely first team inclusions of Moore and Lankshear.

We're already in a healthier position personnel wise than we were in May, so I'll be waiting until the season starts before assessing whether other teams are, on paper, surpassing us or not.

And I'm sure we will, I'd imagine there's a lot going on behind the scenes that we aren't privvy to.
We seem a lot better at keeping our name out of the press recently, unlike Chelsea! 😁

But his "talent" or rather hype, has been around his passing ability, but if you can't combine that with also being a good defender, you won't be a success in the PL.

The CB is 18 and from what I've read he didn't want to go to man utd but was pressured to by his club who said they wouldn't play him if he turned down the move and then by his family as well.
No one offered anywhere near the cash man utd did which says alot. He may turn out to be a quality player but that fee for an 18 year old is a hell of a gamble.
With zirkzee he has 13 goals in 53 games for Bologna, not exactly frightening numbers.
Combine that with how ETH has been undermined this summer and I can't see man utd doing much this season.

My take is he wanted to go to Madrid more not that he didn't want to go to United

Depends on his remit presumably as a BPD next to a more aggressive defender in Martinez.

Reminds me very much of Ferdinand with the same issues surrounding whether he was good enough defensively to compensate his superb talent playing out from the back.

Micky had similar question marks and relied much on his pace to get out of trouble and perhaps the over arching view is that the art of defending is changing anyway with pace and ability in possession being the desired attributes over a big 6ft plus lump kicking 7 shades out of you and raking down your achilles.

Could well be it but if your club feels they need to threaten you to go somewhere then I'm assuming they only did that after he gave indications he didn't want to or at best wasn't inclined to accept their offer. The one thing that seems true is that he wanted Madrid over anyone else.

There were no question marks around Rio's defending after a season at Leeds.

Not sure why you assume I would think a good defender is a "6ft plus lump kicking 7 shades out of you", Cannavaro us probably who I would point to as the best defender of the last 20 years.

Other teams are allowed to sign good players, there's nothing unfortunate about it.

Competition is good, we have a good foundation and I expect us to have a much better (and consistent) season.

Sorry, wasn't assuming mate it was more a general sentiment over the years in this league of what the pre requisite 'model defender' may look like whereas as you say, defending has evolved - either through ability, systems and indeed rule changes.

Maybe the most pointless release clause of all time.
An agent I know told me a while ago he expected this to start happening at certain clubs. Don't be surprised to see it at Villa, Chelsea, Newcastle and basically any other club who will be fighting psr year on year. These clubs are trying to over inflate the values of their players so they have more of a defence to any investigations that may be forth coming.
