Maybe he wasn't given a choice?
We don't know the details of his pay off and probably never will but I doubt he was given the option of staying for another year.
Well, his contract was for another year, wasn't it? So, he had the choice to either stay, not play and collect the big bucks, or to leave, take a financial hit but find a club who will play him. Looks like he opted for the second.

Either way, I guess it doesn't really matter anymore.

Might harden Rennes’ resolve around Doue but they are renowned for selling

Watched this guy play for Belgium at the Euros and I honestly thought he was awful every single game. Felt sorry for Doku having to work with him down the left hand side.

That’s not my view. I think between them they would play 30-40 games a season. We need quality competition and £43m is good value. He is the quality we need.
I would agree with you if we didn't have so many holes to fill/upgrades needed in the squad or we had an unlimited budget, but, as it stands, that fee is too high for what we need.

I really hate buyback clauses in favour of the big teams, I understand why the big club wants them in but if the player does well they'll inevitably move back to the big club which screws the smaller club but least this one is structured in a more friendly way. If he does well Napoli can pay an additional 10m which could significantly increase the buyback and nearly make the buyback unusable unless he really excels.
It's pretty creative

I prefer buy back clauses to loans but agree they always benefit the bigger club.

Had completely missed this, would be a superb signing.

No surprise when it’s Brighton’s recruitment team though.

Will have arguably the most exciting front 3 in the league after this window too with Mitoma, Ibrahim Osman and Yakuba Minteh. (Until we sign Doue and Neto at least😎)
