Hi guys,
Sorry for my raw english, but i'm portuguese and live currently in Portugal.
Regarding Gédson, what is being said among the portuguese football community is that Benfica made another huge deal once the player never was a firsk pick for the lineup, and never showed (in portuguese league - that places 6 or 7 in europe in terms of quality) the potential that a 65M€ deal option pretends to present.
If you want a middlefielder for quite the same value (around 70/75M€): why don't go for Bruno Fernandes (League MVP for the last 2 seasons).
Just look to João Felix (At Madrid): it was sold by 120M and is struggling to show anything close to this value.
As a huge fan of Spurs (my favourite team in England) hope that Levy wont pay for this guy. This is another deal made by Mourinho and Mendes (his agent) that will be another flop.

Welcome to the site, and thanks for the info. I think in Portugal a lot of onus is being put on the fee, however the reality is the price for a 18 month loan is incredibly low and we are short of players in midfield. I don't think Levy has any intention of paying the option fee unless the guy becomes a key player, and even then he'd no doubt try and negotiate this down. He has done it before.

For us, we are getting a promising young player for 18 months for just 5m Euro and I'd imagine pretty low wages by PL standards.

Bit of detective work... I've just re-read the Dragon1 ITK in the ITK part of the forum...

Where it says "we’re in talks with another Portuguese international I can’t say too much but much more experienced than Fernandez and I’m not referring to bf (not silva at milan, not moutinho)" orignally there was a third name in addition to silva and moutinho, which has now been omitted - Renato Sanches. I don't know why it has been omitted.

When you look at the boxes Renato ticks it makes a lot of sense: Portuguese capped (18 times), Mendes client, age 22, EPL experience (Swansea), plays for Lille, CL experience, AND crucially, won't cost the earth. What's not to like for Levy/José?

I remember reading another post saying he is mid twenties. That's optimistic for a 22 year old.

He dismissed Renato.

Yes, the point is it's been redacted now - pop over to the ITK updates.

Just been watching the presser spurs released on him. Looks like he will need to bulk up significantly to survive in this league. He's build like a five year old girl at the moment. Was a bit underwhelmed when we were linked but I hope he brings something a bit different to the midfield.

What a weird way to look at this deal. We have him on loan for 18 months with the option to make it permanent for the set fee. How is that navigating the market poorly? It's basically risk free - if he comes in and smashes it, he'll be worth the fee - if he comes in and flops, we won't pay it. Fucking hell.

I wasn’t commenting on this deal specifically. Given it’s just an option we’ve got, I can see why we’ve pipped for this as a relatively low-risk piece of business, even if the headline figure is still quite crazy.

However: for the last two years, bar Moura we have failed to find any value in the transfer market. We used to be amazing at it: Son, Alli, Alderweireld etc.. it’s quite concerning and principally explains our decline.

I like the fact he has loads of pace. Centre of the park at least you know he's going forward and trying to create chances.

Renato Sanches would be a complete waste of money. Watched him a lot at Bayern and he was at times embarrassing bad with misplacing passes all over the pitch. Couldn't even help Swansea, says it all. Next.

Agree with the last 2 statements 100%, I think a lot of people include ourselves the fans are not seeing the bigger picture here, perhaps even Mourinho is in on this quick and cheap way of rebuilding a team. I have no idea if Levy intends to buy this guy but I bet he will definitely try to renegotiate the final fee if he decides to make the Loan permanent.

If he can negotiate it down, surely they can refuse or negotiate it up? I'm not sure I see the point of an option unless it's a pre-agreed value.

In that sense, you are right. You receive a player for 5m + wages (and yes, he will be one of worst paid in the team, certainly eheh). Let's see how he develops and adapts to a totally different reality and league.

Fans of Nassim Taleb should appreciate that this deal structure is basically the football equivalent of anti-fragility. Limited, known downside with massive potential upside. The opposite of what a deal for Bruno would be - limited further upside due to massive upfront investment and disastrous potential downside.

The option will be negotiated as the maximum we will pay for him and safeguard us against another team coming in. Let’s say he looks to be about a £20m player and we refuse to take up the option but offer them £25m when no other club comes in for him - then I guess they’d sell at £25m rather than insist on £50m and risk having the player come back, on a shorter contract, with nobody else willing to match our bid.

so whilst we wouldn’t be “negotiating down” the options, there is scope for us to get the player below the option but no scope for them to get us to pay above it.

@Dirtysanchez6 - revenge spamming my post is a level of pettiness I’ve got a lot respect for. Top work

I'm pretty sure dear leader has done this is the past, Pau Lopez I believe to be a confirmed case and rumours even of him trying to do so with GLC currently.

It's not such a case of negotiating the option down, but more a case of refusing the option and bidding on an open market, as explained by @Larryjanta above. Unless there is an obligation clause in there (i.e. X appearances) Spurs will not be obligated to take up that same option.

The strength of negotiation will always be with the buyer. If we can walk away at the end of the 18 months there is nothing to stop us doing so unless they "sweeten it". Chances are if we want to keep him it will be because he is happy with us and won't want to return. Benfica would be boxed into a corner somewhat.

A pre-agreed price for an option to buy basically means that you have an agreed price on paper that you can exercise as the buyer. You can always try to negotiate for a lower price later but the seller won't able to raise it during the agreed period unless there are clauses that allow them to do so.
