Just nice to have some new blood in the middle of midfield and especially someone who likes to move the ball forwards a lot and not backwards and sideways all the time. Would be nice to see him, Ndombele and a DM with hopefully Lo Celso switching into that as well. The 'problem' for me is Dele and whether his inclusion allows us to put together what would look quite a solid three man midfield.
As Kane is out, I was wondering if Dele could be used as a false 9, and still have a midfeild 3 of LoCelso, Fernandez and Ndombele.

At least his flicks and tricks would be higher up the pitch, and with Son and Moura operating around him, it might/could work.

Gedson was at the game vs Chelsea. Makes me think it’s less of a panic buy and that we planned to get him in, especially considering we were linked in the summer too. Maybe optimistic as he’s a player that was on our list and Jose is happy with, however it’s a good sign we actually wanted him and not just because we need bodies in midfield now.
Also, surprised he’s happy to come after watching that

Or we could just loan or buy a striker. Left-field radical idea I know.

Shouldn't be underestimated that. A big plus.

I still have no idea if he's any good

Personally I find it an advantage that other than well known players I have little knowledge these days outside the PL.

I’d never heard of this guy so I can’t either get worked up thinking he’s crap, nor start pinning my hopes on how he’s going to transform us and then get depressed when he barely plays.

All I know is that other than his wages ( which I presume will be relatively modest ) all it will cost us is his loan fee for the next 3 transfer windows.

I’m choosing to see the positive side of this as it won’t really eat into any of our budget for other potential signings, rather than the negative that this sort of deal is all we can do because we’re skint or are not willing to release funds.

My gut, having obviously watched every clip available of this guy in the past three days, is that Mourinho has identified that there’s no point joining the club and playing three men in midfield as you don’t rise above the current status quo by imitation, you do so by catching it out. I’m saying this with in mind that Mourinho was the first manager to really succeed in the uk away from 442, with a three man midfield.

This I believe ties in both with why we aren’t targeting the pure DM, which we all here seem to want (myself included) but instead a box to box player like this guy, strong in the tackle, athletid but with good technique and attacking instincts. It seems that Mourinho’s wants two athletes who are also comfortable on the ball, who have the physical attribute to play dynamic, up and down football. This would also link to JJ’s tweet about how Ndombele is seen, why Sissoko ended up playing in the middle despite Mourinho’s initial comment about him and why Winks/ Dier/ Lo Celso are being reluctantly used seemingly. Two are short/ comparatively weak, one is immobile.

Then I look at the top DMs in the league... Kante... best at the base of a 3, same as Fernandinho, same as Fabinho, same as Ndidi.

Now, we can question why Mourinho seems to want a central 2 (maybe accommodating Dele too much?) rather than 3 when the current top 4 all utilise it with excellent DMs, but I understand the thinking. Two players who cover that ground, can beat the press, can receive the ball from defence, can tackle and who can both carry/ pass the ball well while still leaving four attackers in front (including a ten to occupy the opposition DM) could in theory be the answer. It differs from Pochettino’s system in that Pochettino had two fullbacks bomb on and the ‘defensive’ part of the pivot would drop to make a three man defence. No dropping back when we attack here, only one fullback bombs and the other tucks in to make a three man defence. This is why I believe we’re targeting this kid to play with Ndombele rather than a more defensive player, and why we’ve also seen links to Soumare.

I could be talking pure shit here, but that’s how I reconcile the teams we’ve been picking, the player we’re about to sign and the itk we’ve received. 2+2+2=222 perhaps...

Jose did say yesterday that WH was the original blueprint, in which he said there had to be a 'positional player' (aka DM) and a passer. So I do think he will want a DM of sorts. However ideas may have evolved since then. If he is still set on the two man CM he may feel he can train enough 'positional play' into our #8s to ease the burden (most likely candidates for this being Winks and Ndombele, possibly followed by Gedson). It's also possible we have no viable DM targets available now, especially seeing Herc say he still wants a DM.

However in recent games he has toyed with a back 3 and a CM3 with mixed results. I suspect he'll go 3ATB against Watford due to their attacking line. I don't think we'll know for sure until the end of the summer what the true blueprint is.

Interesting thought, though I'm reticent to draw any conclusions from what we do in January.

If we go the summer with no DM, then I'd agree that this is the plan.

Obviously, but I'm talking about the here and now, where we don't have a ready made striker (sorry Troy).

Also, we've survived, maybe even played better in some instances, without a recognised striker.

Just thinking outside the box was all.

Yeah I realise that. Just frustrated at us being so shite at signing strikers in recent years and letting Llorente go without directly replacing him.

I know we’ve done well at times with Son up there, but it’s still not his natural position ( nor Moura) and I’m worried that we’ll end up just having to “make do” again when our manager has made it very, very clear what his feelings are on the subject ( and something I agree with 100%).

Agree that Ali is best closer to the opposition goal, but making blind side runs in behind is very different from playing with your back to goal ( something Son and Moura also suffer from). That’s why we need a proper striker.

No excuses for the club if you ask me.
