Looking a little bit deeper into Gedson, he actually played a ton last year for Benfica. It's a little confusing, because he's only listed as playing in 23 league games at Benfica, but he actually made 46 appearances across all competitions for Benfica last season (League, UCL, Europa, and the two Portuguese domestic cups).

Ruben Dias led the team with 55 and the only others who made more appearances than Gedson were the GK, Grimaldo/Almeida (starting FBs), Pizza (Portuguese league player of the season in 2017), and Seferovic (leading scorer). Gedson even made one more appearance than Joao Felix. Seems like he just really fell out with the new manager and didn't fit the plans.

hang on a minute... There’s a player called Pizza!!!???? He could really help fill our squad out!! Order him immediately!!

I think there are significant differences in portugese and brazilian portugese. As far as i know only people in Rio speak european portugese. In the rest of Brazil the pronunciation is very different.
So therefore a brazilian Gomes is pronounced different than an european Gomes.

I think the "s" in Fernandes is more like "sh" because it's european portugese. Gomes with "s" and not "sh" because it's brazilian.

I could also be completely wrong ;-)
You're absolutely right. Lived in Brazil and now live in Portugal, they are almost like separate languages.

Portuguese is Por-too-geysh
Brazilian Portuguese is Por-tu-geyzz

Although as you say people from Rio (cariocas) have a similar sshhh sound.

I thought the Portugese 's' was pronounced more or less how we would? It was the same when we had Gomes in goal, some people wrongly pronounced it as "Gomesh".
For that Gomes, we were wrong. Because he was Brazilian it would have been Go-mez. So you're right.

Andre Gomes is indeed Go-mejsh. There's a little j sound in there but mostly the sshhh at the end.

For example Raul Meireles was not 'muh-rel-ez', like in Spanish it's more like 'muh-relsh'.

Brazilian Portuguese can be a funny language. For example Fred is pronounced 'Fre-jee' and Hulk 'Hoo-kee'.

Neither Portuguese pronounce the R in words starting with R, so Ricardo is 'Hicardo'.

Pretty annoying when your first name is Ross!

Hahahha unfortunately I got autocorrected there and his name is actually Pizzi.

FFS, I’m gutted. Think of all the extras we could have got with him!

On the other hand, I bet Levy’s kids hate him ordering a dominos, can you imagine!!??
‘Sorry kids, I tried, but just couldn’t get it over the line. They wouldn’t accept a swap for the Iceland frozen lasagne we’ve had at the back of the freezer for 4yrs. Nor were they willing to take £5 a year for 8 years. .... I tell you what though, the frozen Iceland lasagne looks bloody good eh? Shall we just make do with that tonight? Yeah, let’s do that.. Can we get real fire lit to heat it up, the gas and electric are killing me this month!!’

Just nice to have some new blood in the middle of midfield and especially someone who likes to move the ball forwards a lot and not backwards and sideways all the time. Would be nice to see him, Ndombele and a DM with hopefully Lo Celso switching into that as well. The 'problem' for me is Dele and whether his inclusion allows us to put together what would look quite a solid three man midfield.

Great to see us invest in more personnel. I hope we've done our homework and he turns out to be a good investment.

Strikes me of an opportunistic signing that has come around after the loss of Sissoko.

I do find it odd that we are happy to spend 50 plus million on a player that wasn't a priority a month ago.

All whilst a player who has been wanted by us, our previous and present manager and would be the obvious replacement for the historically vital Eriksen is likely to go for 60m. Abit weird.

FIFA rating / FM stats, please. I can't weigh in on whether I think this is a good move or not until I have the relevant information.
