It's actually he would be allowed to be registered, as long as he isn't registered with anybody else when the window closes. So he would have to be released before the window in England closes, and then he can be added to the squad at any point, as his registration isn't with anybody.

Why would they let him go on a free? They would have to pay him all his remaining wages for the duration of his deal, assuming he would even agree to the early termination of his contract.
