An unpopular opinion round these here parts, but why does GLC instantly look so much better than Lamela?

On the surface they’re very similar players, both left footed AMs with a broadly similar playing style. And yet GLC just looks so much quicker in his movement, more purposeful with his passing.

I think we’ve got a real player on our hands there.

OK, it was a good performance away from home, with a couple of lovely goals.

But seriously, in their sweeping comments about team selection, people are not factoring in the quality and, more importantly, the style of the opposition. Red Star have a loose midfield that doesn't press and leaves opponents plenty of space. We eviscerate teams who play like that on a routine basis. Their defence is OK, but their midfield can't keep the ball under pressure.

The problem with this thread is that people are extrapolating from the performances of Lo Celso, Foyth, Ndombele and Sessegnon against this opposition and comparing it to the recent substandard performances of Eriksen, Winks and [opposite side] Aurier against Premiership sides. (For the hundredth time) that ignores the time it takes for new players to get used to the pace and physicality of English football.

Ndombele is getting there after a few months, but Lo Celso has scarcely had any exposure. Concluding that we should immediately replace Eriksen and Winks with Lo Celso and Ndombele against Sheffield United is just simplistic. They've just played 90 minutes in another country. If we were to do that, not only would we be throwing two players without much Premiership experience into starts on a few days' notice, we would also inevitably see a flurry of angry posts here, when they do not replicate their performances against English opposition.

It's not the same kind of football. They can't be expected just to slot in, especially as Lo Celso has been absent with injury for most of the season. It would be great if we could bench the out-of-focus Eriksen in the near future. Despite his goal this evening, he still passed inattentively to the opposition. But it's still an invalid and misleading conclusion that Lo Celso would be a better bet against Sheffield United and subsequent Premiership opponents.

People keep applying what we achieved against Red Star to domestic football and it's bollocks. Red Star's approach is tailor-made for us. That's why their vaunted home record counted for nothing this evening. They have a weak midfield that gives us too much space. Premiership teams form a disciplined low block, fight for possession in midfield, close down and press. It's not an equivalent game and our new players need to get used to it before they become regular starters.

I don't think there is anybody who isn't aware of the vast quality difference between Red Star and the prem, that's a given. I know you made the point during the game and I just wonder if you're just feeling that rather than it actually being what people are saying. The only way these players can get up to speed is if you play them and given our results it's understandable there's an urgency to get them up to speed. However if you look at each player vs their counter part you'd say that Lo Celso won't have much of a problem matching the current standard of Eriksen even if it is tougher opposition. Aurier has done alright I'd say with a couple of hairy moments so I wouldn't expect him to be dropped entirely but Foyth has had two starts vs Argentina, the start tonight and now the next step is prem starts. Ndombele is improving with each game and getting his fitness but you wouldn't be surprised to see him rotated with Winks but it needs to be appreciated the forward thinking we lose if we drop Ndombele but I imagine fitness wise he won't be risked and Sessegnon will slowly need to be integrated and I doubt anybody realistically see's him starting the next game.

Great result. Good performance.

Good debut for GLC

Ndombele settling in and showing his good eye and touches.

Son continues to impress

please continue without the want-aways as much as poss Poch!

A glimpse of what the future might be like without Eriksen, Toby and Verts.

I think we'll be ok, we've got a strong squad. When certain players futures are sorted together with Poch finally going back to a system that has width and balance I am fairly confident for the future.

That commentator has always been a nob ever since he was at ITV. Tries to come out with what he probably thinks is some pseudo Shakespearean shit, but just comes out as complete bollocks.

Peter Drury is an absolute legend and I’ll hear no bad words against him.

His commentary on Roma vs Barcelona is the greatest I’ve ever seen, I thought he was going to have a heart attack

I’ve always thought lamela needs to much time on the ball, great players know what they are going to do before/as they receive to ball.
Don’t get me wrong I really like lamela but he is a split second to slow physically and mentally to be a top player imo

Better balance, low centre of gravity, better dribbler. As you say much the same will set, not sure that RW/F is his best position but as good a position to ease him in. Ideally we need creative players like him centrally. Would like to see him and Lamela in the same side.

Whilst I don’t disagree, I think there’s a lot to be said for playing the players who are likely to form the basis of our future team over those who clearly aren’t. If it’s a choice between mediocre results with disappointing performances from fading stars over mediocre results and promising performances from risers and the understanding that we’re building toward something then I’ll definitely take the latter.
Regardless of the standard of opposition.

Oh you can certainly never question his enthusiasm. I’ve just always thought he over eggs it with the metaphors and hyperbole.

Anyway, good job he wasn’t commentating for our 2nd leg against Ajax or he might actually have had a heart attack.

Nice to see a much younger team with some energy. so good that we have our new players and Foyth is like a new signing. So good to see Dier back as well and looking sharper than in recent times.

can only beat the team in front of you and we did that well.

Why is that an unpopular opinion? We've barely seen GLC in a spurs shirt so anyone would struggle to argue either way!

I agree though, its early days but you can just tell by his movement and weight of pass that he's a player.

Yeah we must realise tonights opposition are not of the same high quality as Colchester, Watford and Brighton.

Wait.... what lol?
As I said above, it's not just about the quality of the opposition, it's about their style of play. Crvena Zvezda's midfield was made for us to have for breakfast. They don't press and they don't retain the ball well.

Ndombele is a superb player, his twists his turns, his eye for a pass and the ability to make the pass. He can even tackle and intercept.

This man got everything.

This man can get to the top.

Personally, I think you take a team that have won well together tonight - and then stick with them for a few games.
There’s been far too much chopping and changing.
Furthermore, these players that are sticking around and showing heart need to be rewarded and backed.
Build their confidence.
The only way we know whether we have a good combination is to stick with them and build their understanding and confidence.

Let’s give these guys a go.
