Germany hasn't got the greatest track record on human rights, has it?

Irrelevant. Neither has the UK. But that's well in the past. What matters is what we do now and whether we learn from our mistakes.

I don't know enough about the the gas industry but I'm guessing the Russia/Ukraine war has influenced this. Not sure where Germany were getting their gas previously and whether this is avoidable. I wouldn't want to buy from Qatar but then I don't know whether the alternative is just as bad.

Edit: just as a disclaimer I'm not suggesting what the UK has done is as bad as the holocaust, but it's certainly not good.

Germany were getting a significant part of their gas from the Nord Stream pipelines from Russia, they were extraordinarily dependent on Russian gas. That will have been a huge factor.

If you're really talking about the Nazi period, the overwhelming majority of the country weren't even born then and it's fundamentally a different country altogether, with a completely new constitution and everything.

I'm not saying we should forget about the atrocities that were committed, but there comes a point where continuing to use it as a stick to beat modern Germans with just doesn't make any sense, and neither does making snarky comments about it when it's of no relevance.

Germany and its economy has been hugely reliant on its coal industry. With them having to stop using coal they are now desperate for gas supplies. But then most of europe is having to rely on shale gas from either the middle east or North America now.

This WC will be a backdrop to a lot of this type of dealing, but doesn't mean we can't highlight social issues and corruption.

His last article (he writes on his own through sub stack) was about a recent migrant death in Qatar. Also he was kicked out of a game earlier in the WC for wearing a rainbow shirt. The US soccer community is in shock.

His brother has posted on Twitter that he suspects foul play involved. Grant was getting death threats over there for his reporting. We are talking about a young, healthy guy who just drops dead? Highly suspicious.

Well my principles caved and I watched the Brazil Croatia match last night. Having a real difficult time with my son and he wanted to watch it with me and fine, fuck it. Mitigated by watching on an illegal stream and spent nothing but still felt bad about it, but I gotta take my breaks with him when I can at the moment he’s 16 and going through a difficult stage with me. Hardly the time to start lecturing him on human rights ?

Young healthy guys don’t die of Bronchitis over night. There may have been an underlying health condition but it would be super naive to rule out foul play. Especially given the context.

They said it was possibly bronchitis, not confirmed so could’ve been any issue, young people die of heart problems all the time.
You can never rule anything out until the CoD has been confirmed. It could be foul play but that would be near the bottom of causes for me, If it’s because he’s questioned Qatars human rights record then 70% of visitors the visitors currently there are in danger.

Obviously the location doesn’t even need discussing as we all know why it’s there but as you say why on earth are they getting young lads to play an annual World Cup?
Not only does it take the prestige off competing in a World Cup but they are just going to end up breaking the lads before they are twenty!
