Germany hasn't got the greatest track record on human rights, has it?
Irrelevant. Neither has the UK. But that's well in the past. What matters is what we do now and whether we learn from our mistakes.
I don't know enough about the the gas industry but I'm guessing the Russia/Ukraine war has influenced this. Not sure where Germany were getting their gas previously and whether this is avoidable. I wouldn't want to buy from Qatar but then I don't know whether the alternative is just as bad.
Edit: just as a disclaimer I'm not suggesting what the UK has done is as bad as the holocaust, but it's certainly not good.
