It replaces the CL though doesn't it?
Effectively, yes. But this is really all just politics.

Putting this out in the open helps FIFA put pressure on UEFA in the ongoing "war" there, which is essentially FIFA feeling UEFA have too much power in club football and wanting a piece of it for themselves, and it helps the big clubs put pressure on their respective leagues and FAs to give them more individual power or at the very least large concessions.

No surprise at all that this has reared its head again after the Big Picture debacle.

If it's an alternative to the CL and places are earned each season on merit, then it's not a huge thing to worry about.
The problem is that this will quickly become exactly what certain clubs (who feel threatened by the presence of rapidly improving clubs) want - an exclusive members only competition, and those who organise it will ensure their clubs will be ever present.

The 12 founder clubs they are reporting cannot get relegated from it for 20 years, it is basically just a repeat of the Der Spiegel leaked report from a couple of years ago.

So would assume if we miss out we wouldn't be in it for 20 years, as would be a country max limit

Hence my second bit
And you're right. The whole concept of merit means nothing to these people, all they want is a closed off US style franchise system in a capitalist structure where they buy the best players instead of the American socialist one where the best are drafted and traded within strict salary caps

First game I went to 1951 the last game I go to might be 2021. Greedy American bastards.
If it was me I would say to these clubs apart from the now Engish leagues / FIFA / EUFA / run as now any club will not be allowed to play in any of them if they set up a new league . I just hope and think we are the fifth club that will not be automatically in this greed club .
I hope that EUFA and FIFA ban all players from their competitions if this goes ahead .
So all these players that want in on this not only will they not be allowed tp play in EUROPA and Champions league but World cups and european international comps . Good luck with that .
In all honesty I dont think it will happen but its a move to squeeze more money out of the powers that be .

If this goes ahead and there are only 5 teams allocated to England, then who will miss out?

Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea.....all too wealthy to leave out. That leaves us and Arsenal for one place.

I get the sinking feeling that we could be about to be shafted once more.

These pricks are messing with fire at the minute. People are losing their jobs and homes and these greedy pricks are trying to squeeze us for more.
It'll blow up in their faces I'm certain of it.
People will only take so much shit.

It's back

But some sort of European Premier League instead with FIFA's backing this time.

This is not going to go away any time soon.

Lower league clubs are struggling and going under, which is getting worse due to Covid and FIFA & some PL clubs want to spend 4.6 billion on a new league!!

Wouldn't Arsenal be ahead of Chelsea even if we weren't?

In Rugby down in the southern hemisphere, they created a "Super League" which involved creating total of 12 new teams from NZ, Australia and South Africa (it has since expanded, reaching a peak of 18 including a team from Argentina and currently sits at 15 teams).

The problem they have had, is it has all but killed the regular Rugby and previously prestigious cups, no one gives a shit about them anymore, as all of the star players played in the Super league.

The problem they have now, is people have lost interest in the Super league too, as its just the same teams playing each other all the time with an even smaller amount of teams winning it. The country is still crazy about the Allblacks but that's only because they always win. Every person in NZ I talk to about Rugby all agree that they would have been better off having a similar format to CL qualification, where the regular Rugby teams qualify for the Super League based on their league finish, rather than creating new separate teams.

I can see the same happening with the "European Premier League" and current domestic competitions if a large number of teams can't be relegated for 20 years.

Is this the league that they want to be played on weekends rather than midweek?

I'd love to see a poll showing how many fans would go to these games, pay to watch them on TV, stop watching football altogether, etc.

As I've mentioned on the Project Big Picture thread, the change to the Conference system killed Super Rugby for me. Seeing the domestic sides play each other more, when I already see them play in local tournaments, took the fun out of it. There were no games to look forward to anymore. It was at this point that Newlands started running empty. I even stopped watching Curry Cup rugby. Super Sport started televising games between non professional clubs around SA and I watched one of those games when lazing in front of the telly. It was actually a blast to watch. Since then I only watched those games and Varsity rugby. Way more fun.

A lot to discuss here.

One thing to note though, is that those who are putting this league together will have an eye on the world market and new fans in 10 to 15 years' time.

These two customer bases may not care that much about the romance or tradition of football, at a local level, in Europe.

Non-European fans don't have the same emotional connection as a local fan would. As for new fans, they will grow up with whatever the status quo is at the time; it's what they will have always known.

Personally, I think this will develop into a World Super League in 20 years time and be akin to F1, where a group of 'Mega Clubs' tour the world.

Football at a local level will continue, but will be separate from the travelling bonanza of the World League.

Finally, not sure where it leaves International Football. If the finances are such that players are getting 1m a week, the league might demand that players ditch international games. How many players are going to turn down a huge pay cheque to play for their country?

Which means International Football becomes sub par.

I think it's all going in this direction, it's just how long it will take to get there.
