I'm probably the biggest BSOL here but this is absolutely fucking disgusting from Levy.

The club made a world-record profit of £114m in 17/18 season and £68m in 18/19 season. The club is one of the most rececession-proof industries and regardless of how long this virus goes on, will be just fine.

To reduce the lowest paid staff salaries by 20% and then shift the rest of what they will be paid onto the country so effectively everyone in the country will be paying their wages is despicable. On top of this there may be a long delay before they can get their furloughed wages from the government.

Also whilst it's not the players responsibility to sustain the club's staff, they should have a look in the mirror right now too.

We paid £45m in taxes the last 2 years, the same as Man U and Liverpool did combined. Teams like Everton haven’t paid a penny in taxes for the last 2 years so are we really in the wrong for doing this compared to what other clubs have put into the government coffers for the last couple of years? We eclipse every team based on taxation, even Arsenal have only paid £9m (they clawed back £4m last season due to their losses) so unless I’m being daft and missing something, even with this unfortunate circumstance we would have still paid more than most.

It’s tough but people aren’t having to put the hours in at work, aren’t having to travel and lay out the expense in order to etc. I don’t know much about it so forgive me in advance but with the huge figure of taxes we have paid compared to everyone else (nearly double what Liverpool have etc) does it give this decision more validation? This isn’t an area I know a lot about, maybe someone can shed a little light on it for me.

Absolutely this. It's a total F***ING disgrace that a couple of weeks in we're already dipping into the taxpayer money. Why am I not surprised it's us leading the way with this.

As for people saying the right business decision is to use the furlough system if it benefits you - I completely disagree. This is a scheme that has been rolled out as an emergency in about a day to make sure people can survive. It is so unbelievably open to abuse as a result. Companies should "do the right thing" for once in their lives and only use it if absolutely necessary.

We paid £45m in taxes across 2 seasons. Surely we are dipping into our own taxpayer money paid aren’t we? I mean we won’t be getting £45m back due to this so how is it bad when no other team has paid anywhere near as much tax wise as we have in recent times?

@PeeEyeEmPee didn't answer the rest of my response though, eh?

See, you only come out the woodwork to bash the club, especially those in charge - you don't want to engage in debate either, you always reach for the spam button.

That's how I know you [enter choice word here] ENIC.

Dude, what the actual fuck are you talking about? When have I ever spammed you before? I don't recall ever having any sort of conversation before.

I didn't have much hope for the level of debate when your level of understanding appeared limited to viewing everything I say through the prism of love and hate, as though it were not possible for one not to have particularly strong feelings either way.

Well, he might be able to justify it financially, but cutting these wages by 20% and dipping into the public purse seems miserably mean spirited, especially in the light of his bonus. Says everything about the club and its priorities I'm afraid.

So about ENIC then ... You don't like their stance on this even though that's what business does?

Sadly the club are financially obsessed money is the motivator here real shame that effort wasn't put in to be the best club, instead of CL winners of the balance sheet.

I think you will find that except for the Man cities and Chelsea s of this world other clubs will go the same route otherwise they may be taking the Bankruptcy route . Also I am tuned to anti Tottenham stories in he newspapers but having them almost every day when there is no football is making my belief that there is an agenda against us a reality .
Talk about never let the truth get in the way of a good story Dave Kidd has written a story about how Levy has taken £7million out of the club at this time of trouble and blasted him for reporting record profits and taking such an amount of salary. No mention that its last years figures and no mention that every club is required to publish these figures by law . I tell you even in these dire times the slugs and snakes in the press are still writing untruths to suit their anti spurs agenda . By the way there is no company in the world that would not like a chairman that turns in record profits almost yearly and then takes his dues in fact they would be queueing up to get him
Whilst I am sometimes feeling let down by Levy with his transfer dealings or lack of dealings there is no body who can lambast the way he runs the club in all other ways especially the shysters in the tabloid who to a man seem to have nil integrity and 100% bias against spurs .

I love that almost everything on here comes back to how everyone hates us. The media, other clubs and their managers, players and fans. Shit, even our own fans hate us.

I was about to post something similar. It's presumably legally quite complicated for Levy as an employer to force the players to take a pay cut while not cutting the wages of other employee. There's nothing stopping the players clubbing together to cover the 20% for everyone else voluntarily though

It will be interesting to see if the club make up the 20% if the players reduce their wages. It could be part of the agreement from the players.

This table is from Reddit.

We could ask the players and executives to take a 1% pay cut and afford to pay the non-playing day-to-day staff their full 100%!

It does seem in poor taste considering most of the others are not doing it.

I doubt most of the others have got the same levels of debt as we currently have. Our loan repayments for the stadium were pretty much covered by our sponsorship deals, but if they've been suspended now....

There are two issues with the decision by Levy. One, is whether a football club that makes a lot of money, maybe not profits but revenue should go to the government for money? The second is, which is the major one though, why cant the club after taking the decision to furlough not top up the 20%? Thats my biggest grievance and suspect it is a massive part of the backlash

We don't know if they have or havent though do we?

Besides, anyone earning under £2,500 a month after tax is covered for all their pay I believe. I doubt the 550 people we are talking about are earning more than that?

I find it strange that no football club(especially those at the top levels) seem to have an insurance policy against the possible loss of income due to individual games, part of, or all of the season being cancelled. Surely it’s good business practice to take out insurance against possible losses?

Maybe insurance companies won't cover it?

When every other club goes bust due to paying their staff during this difficult time, us and Newcastle can play a 2 team Premier League - we may even win a trophy at last! :woot:
