He's 23, made 5 goals and 10 assists in his first season. I think he'll be fine. I agree we need another winger to change flavors against different setups.

I agree Johnson will be fine as an attacking option but I'm far more worried about his lack of effort and awareness defensively...

In a weird sort of way I guess Eze is 'ready to go' if we know the exact conditions of the deal palace require and have had extensive discussions with the player himself too. It's just about pushing the button.

You're right though you'd have to expect some media chatter a couple of days before any signing happens, even for deals that are kept under wraps for a long time.

Specifically, I think the situation is interesting in that Palace Plan A is, Do not sell Eze and (therefore) make it difficult by insisting on buy-out.

That works when they figure that the other team (us) with a Plan A of negotiate, has a Plan B of, walk away and pursue other targets. A Plan A offer of installments, players, incentives of a value even above the release price still makes sense to turn down.

But if and when they figure that the clubs Plan B is, or has become, Pay the Release, that changes as it becomes self-interested to negotiate for best value, as you figure you're losing the player either way.

But of course this is a tough back and forth as you don't know how much to trust what a club says their situation is and it makes sense to lie (I wonder whether its likely/possible for Palace to do a 're-negotiate' only once a firm bid at the release is lodged so you know that's the fallback and you can't be bluffed)

A related complication is that here it makes rational sense for both sides to wait it out until as late as possible as long as their respective Plan As remain the same. So would make sense for any deal to be late in the window if it were to transpire.

Obviously if City etc come along and just fancy slapping the money on the table, different and simpler story.

It's important to remember that the club believed a lot of other things as well though.

1. We believed that we could get Eze outside of his release clause
2.We believed Mendes when he said we would get Neto
3. We believed we could convince Gallagher to come here etc. etc.

Not belittling @Hercules info in the slightest but it has to be taken with the context that not everything the club believes to be true, is actually true at all.

Why isn’t Eze the relatively easy one? Just meet the clause

Yeah, 60 big ones for a teenager is not where I would imagine we were hoping to be fishing with our interest here, having just spent 50m+ on teenagers this year already. Shame as he looks an exciting talent, but there will always be another!

This happens to Chelsea all the time. Buy youth expensive, loan them out, sell them and then see them florish for other clubs. Buy 3 expensive senior player that are similar
