The point was more that he was never going to be available for cheep so why did we bother spending time on the deal.
I imagine part of that answer is that it's exactly what the role of the recruitment team is. It would be a bit weird if they decided amongst themselves that the price would be too high without even enquiring about the player.

Whilst I have no experience of footy transfers myself, I've always got the impression that the real time is taken drawing up the legal specifics of a contract. Everything before that - conversations with agents/players and enquiries to clubs - isn't a giant burden. Online journos like to use phrases like "winning the race" or "bidding war", but I would imagine it's mainly phone calls and emails in the early stages.

I would be really interested to know the inner workings of it all, but it wouldn't surprise me if you have spent more time writing about Doue than the club has spent pursuing him. That's not a dig at you at all... just a reflection of the burden to a club in making player enquiries (in my estimation).

Of course but by various accounts Doué visited our training ground and Ange talked to him on the phone. Now obviously the scouting department did their job but I’d be surprised if it got as far as him visiting Hotspur Way without having at least a ballpark figure of what they would want. Now maybe his agent said it might be a lot less then Rennes real evaluation but I’d think it’s a fairly good bet that we would have been in touch with Rennes beforehand especially as we have a good relationship with them.

All true but look at what happened with Ivan Toney, Brentford hoped for a bidding war that would see his value pushed up. None materialised and now they are wondering how best to cut their cloth on discount.

Had psg and Bayern not both follower up interest they wouldn't have been able to play their hand from such a position of strength, and we may have been able to get a cheaper deal and add ons.

I totally agree. I just don't think any of that would have taken a particularly long time, and I can't see a reason why we wouldn't be doing that sort of stuff. We aren't privy to everything of course so it might be that the club have poured hundreds of hours into pursuing him... but it feels likely to be a handful of hours over a handful of months, which seems pretty normal to me.

Personally I would prefer that the club is doing those things, rather than us deciding it's never going to happen so not even bother. Like you say, if we have a decent relationship with Rennes then it might open more avenues in terms of structuring a deal, or maybe they gave us permission to speak to Doue without any sort of financial indication from our end.

It's hard to really form an opinion without knowing all the ins and outs, but we've faced competition from Bayern and Barca in recent windows and ended up with pen on paper, so I can definitely see the value in making the enquiries and courting the player.

The latest news on the French websites is that PSG have offered €60m for Doue topping an offer of €55m from Bayern. The ultimate source appears to be a journalist on L’Equipe.

Nah. Doubt it’s connected in anyway. For the price Doue would have been targeted as a first team signing. The young Korean player is clearly a development signing.

We know that Ange thinks highly of t some of the Asian leagues. I think this kid is being brought in to play. Obviously not this season but from January or next summer I would imagine.

I think he will play eventually but not in the next 18 months. It's going to take a massive amount of adaptation for an 18 year old with one season under his belt in the K league. Just for comparison, Mitoma played 3 seasons in the Japanese league before Brighton signed him, they then loaned him to the Belgium league for a s season before he eventually started getting game time for them as a 24 year old.

The loan was so he could get more credits for a work permit

Agree, I think he will very likely need a lot of time to adapt before we can expect to see him with any regularity. We certainly shouldn’t be putting any expectations on him when he joins Jan.
