No I haven't read an article nobody has linked.

This is the link to the article in De Spiegel that kicked it off.

If you haven't read through this thread from the start I'd recommend doing so.

Regardless of whether he is or isn't likely to have done it, I still don't see what possible good can come of random celebrities just chiming in with their opinions on it publicly when they have no more knowledge of the case than anyone else. That's a very dangerous precedent.

I'm as baffled as you, no idea why she needs to say anything on the matter, let the courts deal with it.

From what I've read of her comments, which isn't much, she feels like speaking up supports victims of sexual abuse.

Generally I agree that people should stay out of these types of cases until the courts make a decision, but this is a ten year old case where the accused is hero worshipped by millions. I think a lot of people have lost faith in this ever getting to court.

It's very dangerous to paint her as a victim when we don't know what the truth is, for all we know she could be lying here, what happens then?

Letting the courts deal with it requires a certain amount of faith in the legal system that many people simply don't have. Much as vigilante justice serves as a substitute for an inadequate state justice system, comments like hers (as well as a lot of elements of the wider Me Too movement) can be seen as a populist response to a system that doesn't provide justice to victimized women in cases like these. Lack of faith in the system could also explain the victim's behavior in this situation that resulted in the case being dropped.

I know this is a very complicated issue, but personally, I have no problem with her stating her opinion on this matter, especially since it doesn't really contradict his own account of what happened that night.

There's not much I disagree with here but just as much rape cases there are there's an untold amount of cases where the victim has lied to get the accused thrown in prison which you could equally point fingers at the justice system so no one wins here, there's potential faults on both sides.

What we don't need is people coming out such as Morgan who has a big platform herself playing God on this because as much as it may encourage women to come forward and speak up it will also encourage them to commit perjury, no one wants to see that.

I disagree with the notion that there's an "untold amount" of cases of supposed victims lying. There have been many studies done on this subject, so we do have a sense of at least the proportion of cases in which the victim is lying. Most reliable sources put that figure at between 2%-10%. On an individual level, he-said she-said cases are obviously pretty difficult to sort out, but as a whole, acting as if the issues of false accusations and founded accusations that don't result in consequences for the perpetrator are proportional problems doesn't reflect the realities of this case.

Also, who specifically is being encouraged to commit perjury here? An accusation like this puts the accuser through hell, what with the callous way in which these cases are handed by an impersonal system. To act as if there's anything more than a statistically insignificant amount of women who are just waiting for the right time to pounce and to ruin an innocent person's life just isn't believable to me at all. If they're morally broken enough that they're willing to lie about a rape, then nothing Alex Morgan is going to say seems likely to change that basic fact.

He seems to be doing ok. This isn't a normal guy who's life will be ruined. He's a multi millionaire who laughed off a £16.6M tax evasion fine.

What if she is a victim? Let's not forget that the paper who printed that article say they have documents that he signed in which he admits she told him to stop several times and that he apologized to her afterwards. Ronaldo is a very rich man he can sue the paper for printing lies. Obviously if he did that he'd risk the papers being presented as evidence in court.
