I imagine he'll be one of many looking to leave in the summer. We're not an ambitious club so we'll struggle to keep ambitious players. The manager and medical team situation will add to the problem.
Most of the ambitious players in our squad haven't been playing anywhere near good enough to get interest from ambitious clubs. So in a way, we win.

Daft question and I know that we are all super willing to believe the worst possible things - but are there any quotes or reasons to believe this is true?

For those who view this as a huge blow, here's a "devil's advocate" viewpoint:

Injury history is not good.
Always miraculously fit for Argentina though (suggesting potential lack of commitment to the club)

Made multiple unforced errors that led to goals conceded and points dropped during the first few months of the season, before getting injured.
Aside from these mistakes being an issue, the fact that he (vice-captain!) seems to blame everyone else and feels deserving of a move to Real Madrid brings his character into question.

Questionable discipline / suspension record.

Despite being confident on the ball, quite a lot of people have observed (subjectively) that he has a tendency to slow down our build-up play far too much.
Everything you say here is true.
