Going after this would confirm my worries that there is no strategy except opportunism

Certainly looks like its a main element to our MO.

And its why we 'sit tight' well into the window.

Personally I find it exceptionally frustrating, paricularly when it compimises our ability to get in whats needed earlier.

Why the chavs don’t just give him a new contract and keep him I’ll never know instead of pissing money up the wall on a load of random players. He’s pretty much their most consistent performer alongside Palmer.

If I were him and his agent I’d stay there another year and leave on a free next summer and pocket the cash.

I can see why we are in for him though. Ange wants jacks of all trades in midfield it seems and he’s one of those.

typically followed up with the "well we tried" at the end of the window when left short.

not gonna judge this window till it's over but man oh man i feel like we really need to get an attacker in ASAP.

I just don’t get this. Realistically he’d be (in some form) competing with the following midfielders:

Bentancur
Sarr
Bissouma
Bergvall
Gray
Devine
Skipp (who I suppose might go)

And to a degree, as game time generally will be at a premium, even if only for short spells with other kids.

I’m not even montioning the AMs like Maddison, Deki, Moore, Donley etc, even though there could be an element there too.

That’s a lot of genuine quality and potential. Doesn’t add up to me.

Would only work if we were selling one of the above.

Can we not have both strategy and opportunism?

A priority list of targets with individuals getting bumped higher up the list if their price/availability changes for the better?

Opportunism is the sole action of the new recruitment group is it?

considering the low amount of deals done throughout the league, your “sit tight” narrative must be the same for the likes of every club within the top tier of English football.

Ange has had a good look at Bents, Biss and Sarr, maybe he doesn't rate them? Bergvall, Gray and Devine don't have a senior cap between them. CG is a known performer. Adds up to me...

Which would therefore agree with my last point.

If we’re selling one of those three, fine. If we’re not, it doesn’t make sense.

I don’t think Ange rates Bentancar enough maybe he feels he’s too slow for our system

However this Gallagher link is the most tedious of this summer . I just don’t see Chelsea doing business with us at all

I'd be surprised if Gallagher wanted to goto Atletico, he has the power in this situation and does not need to be forced.

I can see a possibility of United coming in for him once they sell McTominay and Wan-Bissaka, then come in with 50m which both Chelsea and Gallagher will be happy with.

Trust me mate, lots of people out there are swayed by rose-tinted glasses just because these players are from rival clubs.

It’s pure tribalism at work and thats why these people are “fans’, not management.

There are even those out there who wants to see the club fail so that they can say “I told you so and blame it on Levy”. Talk about letting their hatred for an individual outweigh their love for the club.

We won with a 16 year old academy product scoring the winner a few days ago and someone from a whatsapp group were bashing Levy for not signing players in their prime. FFS
Disagree. Pretty confident that if Palmer was available to us, we'd all be massively in favour.

In all seriousness would only make sense if we were to sell GLC, Skipp and Bentancur otherwise we just have too many players who play centrally to keep them all happy. Especially if we sign Eze too.

It would be:

Gray, Bissouma, Gallagher, Sarr, Bergvall, Maddison, Eze and Devine.

This is absolute nonsense. Genuinely, I think the portion of fans this applies to is incredibly small, and is likely more than counter balanced by those who would see us getting him as 'getting one over on our rivals'.

He's a perfectly good player, but not a great player, from what I've seen. He has a first class attitude, and provides a good base for the players around him. He's not a bad finisher either. He somewhat lacks quality mind you, and he'd need to be complemented by that in the players around him.

I think that's a fairly objective assessment.

I'll say it again: if (1) we have taken a view that one or some of the senior incumbents in the slots he'd compete with (i.e. Bissouma and Bentancur, maybe even Sarr), isn't going to cut it and (2) if we can sell them contemporaneously (or near enough) at a fair price...then fine. I'm sure he'd add something to the squad.

But without that, it further bloats an area of the pitch where we're well covered, and have some really good kids coming through.

Gallagher coming in would probably mean Bentancaur and Skipp leaving, I think I could live with that. Should recoup a lot of the fee and still allow us to go for our main targets.

The Euros showed me what I already suspected about Gallagher. He’s very good at running and pressing but he’s pretty average on the ball.

If we buy another midfielder we really need to make sure they can retain possession and possess a good level of progressive passing ability. This was seriously lacking from our team last season - especially when Maddison was out for long periods - and we suffered a lot as a result.

Having energy should really be a given in the modern game.

Yep. Will be surprised if Lo Celso is still here at the end of the window and think Skipp will push for a move to get regular football.

That leaves Bentancur and personally I'd like to see how he gets on next season as he clearly has quality but just wonder whether the stuff he has been involved in over the summer coupled with possible doubts over injuries and Ange's desire to bring in Gallagher see's him being sacrificed.

Never really been quite sure when it comes to Gallagher however can see why he'd be someone that would appeal to Postecoglou.

He'd be daft not going to Atletico. New life experiences, play under Simeone. Probably be adored by fans. More likely to win stuff.

As opposed to moving across London to a bloated cm, luke warm reception by fans. Just feels a bit unimaginative for the player.

I think he is fantastic personally. But Atletico feels like a better fit.
