No question we were in a difficult run but imo panicked and so all has hurt us more long term. A poor season whilst new players were found and tactics re-thought would have been a bump in the road; right now it looks like a car crash

I have no doubt that if Levy had not acted we would have been relegated. It was not a bump in the road - it was relegation form over an 8 month period (end Jan - Oct), stretching across two seasons.

UPDATE: I really do not see what people can disagree with. Under Poch we were averaging close to 1 point per game since Feb 2019 (from end of January 2019 onwards). That *is* relegation form. We only won 5 of his last 20 games in charge (and only 3 of those were in the league).

A lot of revisionism going on in here it seems, it was time for Poch to move on, he knew it as did Levy, would welcome him back in the future after he wins a few trophies and gains more experience as a coach.

Really nice words from him and I hope he does come back one day and make a success of it.

Honestly think some people’s obsession with him is unhealthy though. Have a wank or something ffs.

I think Poch is getting off a bit easy here. In fairness nobody in this thread (yet) has slammed Levy for sacking Poch but people do forget that Poch appeared to want out. The Athletic went as far to say that he met with United officials on the motorway before whilst he was still our manager and those strange comments on the eve of the CL final saying he would leave if he won the CL...

If anything, I think the time away from Spurs has made Poch reflect and I do think he regrets a lot of the stuff he said and did.

In an ideal world, Poch can go away to a club like Bayern or Juve, build his CV and experience winning trophies, see us win some silverware under Mourinho then return shortly after.

Levy gave us Jol, Harry and Poch. The club improved each time when he appointed them. I just hope whoever the next guy levy appoints (hopefully it is jose) continues the trend.

Be interesting to see how the Arab owners get round fair play, not sure they can use the same trick as city and psg .

There probably won't be ffp rules in coming years. Football will take what money they can get their hands on. If Newcastle spens it will drip through the system to many clubs. Hopefully us with a Rose transfer as well.

There is still FFP. And when takeover it's not even announced I don't get that panic that they will spent hundreds of millions and will be top4 in next 3 years, when the better chance is that they will be another Everton or West Ham who are linked with top players and that ends on spending a lot for mediocre players

But what if I wank while thinking about Poch?

He sacked them all and gave us Ramos, Sherwood and Mourinho. Or was it AVB? Fact is, it’s been a lot of managers. Some did a good job.

For them though the chances of spending decent amount of money, is likely to get much better quality of player.
The transfer prices will reduce dramatically for next few windows, it is a buyers market.
The timing is perfect for them to be able to make an immediate impact.
They will get a lot better quality for the money they were previously prepared/able under FFP to spend.
Newcastle have quite a bit of room in respect of FFP due to the frugal spending of the club over last couple of years, and they will no doubt bring in extra revenue streams (stadium naming deal for example).
I would expect them to be big players this window (it will just be convincing top players to go there that will be their biggest hurdle, similar to Man City had in the early days of the Sheikh's stewardship, without CL to offer them, but money talks)

FFP is being discussed, it's not a given it will be there the coming year or two. If it's being relaxed this will be the perfect time to come in for rich owners and spend big. Newcastle owners are not comparable with what happened at Everton and West Ham. They are on another level.

Almost certainly there will be relief given for lost income due to the pandemic.

Yeah, they already relaxed it. By postponing by one month deadline for sending some financial details from Match to April. Aren't they comparable? How much money the owners have doesn't mean anything.

That might have been part of it, but what was worse was that, as I've just been making the point on an unrelated topic, we/he totally lost oversight as to what made the team tick, what was important, allowed standards to completely drop and the make up to the team largely lost the plot.

Everyone at the club, fans, players, chairman, and most importantly manager forgot what put us in that position and what took us forward.

Yes , the team couldn't keep up that intensity , but while it was here it was a very satisfying to see . Obviously our central plank
was this intensity as Toby said, 'Without our energy we are just ordinary' . I agree that we've not been the most technically gifted team .
Our energy was everything imo . For me , this is a big prob for Jose . We don't have the skill level in depth which you need if you are no longer able to steamroller teams . Jose has always been able to buy technique . Fashioning a slick top of the pile team out of Poch's energy based side is a tall order for him.

I wouldn't underestimate how teams gradually learned to deal with us . The speed with which the opposition would spring their carefully worked out pressing traps when our defenders had the ball or Lloris was about to roll it out . Also even in our pomp there was the occasional defeat to a crafty ,Lo-blocking physical opponent who let our attackers fruitlessly wear themselves out and then snatched a breakaway goal to beat us .

Would love it if he comes back. Bring Jesus Perez, Toni Jimenez and the others too!

Poch only had I'm guessing a dozen (?) games at the new WHL which is a big shame given how long he had to wait like the rest of us while delay after delay was being called. Hopefully he will be able to settle into the new place as home again one day.

Just goes to show how hard it is to find a good manager doesn't it. Man Utd, Liverpool and now Arsenal have struggled to find good ones. Liverpool are the only ones to strike gold with Klopp but a lot of things still have to come together for him to be a success. I suspect he'd be the first to say its not all down to him. The other two still havent found one.

It's how the club support the manager that's important. That and giving them time. I was far from convinced by Poch at the beginning, but I didn't want him out, I wanted to give him time to see what he could do. Same with Mourinho.

I get this image of someone sitting at a kitchen table, months after the breakup, looking through old photos and crying.
