An American sawker expert (three words that just don't work side by side) was on Talksport earlier and said that, going by the rule book, that counts as assaulting a referee and should carry a 3 month ban. He then went on to explain that there's a disclaimer included for this rule and most of the others, that if a top level pro does it then the punishment might not be quite so severe, but if you're a sunday league player then that's a straight 3 month ban.

To be fair, any captain is going to get frustrated with the refs when his team is down to 8 players. Gotta keep your composure though, or else the team could then be down to 7, like what happened here.

Anyway, highly doubt it'll be a 3 month ban. American soccer sort of makes it up as they go along. So it'll probably be a few weeks ban. Will be interesting to see how Klinsmann handles it, though.

Don't think I've ever heard of a game where 4 got sent off. Can you imaging that happening in Europe or South America? The ref would have been killed before he left the stadium!

In South America, the players do alot worse things to refs, and sometimes even rewarded for such behavior(just ask barca's resident cannibal luis suarez).

They only needed one more player sent off for the game to be abandoned.

Imagine if red cards in the FA Cup didn't apply to the Premier League. You're down by a couple goals in the 85th minute and you decide to let out some frustrations against your rival because the suspension would not apply until next years FA Cup. This is what happens in the US Open Cup. The suspensions don't carry over to MLS so the players take the liberties of more dangerous tackles, fighting, and other things that cause these cup games to get out of hand. They don't care if they get suspended for future USOC games because they'll be playing in MLS this weekend and thats what pays the bills.

They only had 3 players sent off.
They were down to 7 men at the end because Obafemi Martins also went off injured after they had made all their substitutions.

I received a three month ban as a fan for calling a referee "a fucking idiot" last season. That was a Sunday League game so I would suggest that man has a point.

16yo kid down with blood pouring from his head, and the ref plays advantage.

Outrageous.
