He's a damn good player and it's a shame he's potentially going to a league competitor, but he isn't really what we need. Rather spend big on a RB, pivot midfielders, or a Kane back-up who can also play WF.

Alli, Lo Celso, Lamela, and maybe Eze (?) can all fill where Fernandes would play.

For the money involved we need to know he’s the right player. Look at the last attacking midfielder we were heavily linked with in Malcolm. Reasonable pace, creative, goalscorer, very good at long range shots and free kicks. Only thing going against him was he had only performed in France. He ended up at Barca, flopped and has since gone elsewhere and isn’t pulling up trees there either. For the sort of money Sporting want for Fernandes we should be only targeting players in England, Spain, Germany and Italy to an extent.

i agree that we have other priorities and maybe we should spend our limited funds on other players. I absolutely understand your point.

But having Alli, Eze and Lamela should never be a reason not to sign someone who is arguably better than all of them.
We also have a right back (Aurier), but almost everybody would welcome another RB. If there is a chance to upgrade a position we should take it. Regardless of how many players we have in that position. You can always sell the players you already have to raise some money to spend on other positions (RB, DM...)

Difference is that Mourinho has already said Alli is his number 10 and we other ITK from JJ that says Alli is central to the team rebuild. This doesn’t indicate to me he wants an upgrade.

We also have ITK (Hercules yesterday) that he wants Bruno.
Bruno can also play in the same line up as Dele (Bruno 8, Dele 10).

edit: but of course, we are talking about 60m or so. It's no shame not to sign him when you are on a budget and have other areas you need to improve. But if there is a chance to sign him i think we have to do it.

If Mourinho wanted to he could play B Fernandes, Alli and Son/Lo Celso behind Kane. This would work if Sessegnon continues to develop into a left back and we bring in a quick attack minded right back. Look at Barca when they were in their prime, you don’t need pace up top if you get it from your marauding full backs.

i know what you mean and can't disagree (but for attacking fullbacks you need cover in MF - especially an intelligent holding midfielder with great positioning. Like Barca had/have with Busquets).
But Barca always had pace in the front 3 as well (Messi, Suarez, Neymar, Dembele, Griezmann, Pedro, Alexis, Villa, Henry, Giuly,...).

Anyway. Back to Spurs. ;-)

There is no chance we are getting him sadly. Our rumoured interest only strengthens Sporting’s negotiating hand and also gives Spurs fans something to hang onto, which suits Levy as it keeps the fans at bay. His record is phenomenal and we will regret this. But it’s a non-starter as circa 20 years of ENIC tells us

What is it with this circa 20 years of enic nonsense? Do you think without enic's remodelling of the club and icreasing its value 15 fold you would even be considering top draw signings? You can't have it both ways.

Under Sugar we signed possibly the best striker in the world in Klinsmann and two stars of the World Cup that year in Popescu and Dumi. All in ONE window. ENIC have remodelled the club for their own gain - every penny for the stadium is either debt against the club or paid for out of profits generated. ENIC have not backed the club at all. It’s now a great asset to sell.

That’s what I mean by the last 20 years but if you want to admire a great business it is then go for it, but I’m more interested in the football club aspect.

Surprising that United haven't jumped at this deal. Would be a tremendous upgrade on Lingard and the type of player who could really link play together for them. But I keep wondering whether they're trying to hold their powder for Maddison. Woodward has this new obsession with expensive young English players. If that's the case, then it makes sense they'd want to shift Lingard/Pereira first before bringing in BF.

Emphasis on supposedly. Call me cynical but the image rights stumbling block seemed a bit too convenient at the time.
I saw something that it was 14mil for the image rights. That’s peanuts to get a player in like that if you really want him.

It'd be interesting, hypothetically, to see who others would prefer out of Grealish or Fernandes.

I say that on the basis that we could have a lot more "options" by the summer.

Could the money not being there be wages?

Either manu offering high wages we just can't watch, or to do with ffp (ware wages included in this?)

Indeed. I just don't think the Dybala transfer was ever really close. We'd already broken our transfer record for Ndombele, along with the Sess and Lo Celso transfers. Seemed inconceivable that we would spend big again in the same transfer window - not unless we sold someone like Eriksen, which obviously didn't happen.
