I wish people would just get a grip. Work. In. Progress.
Expect a few ups and downs. Third season is where it will all come together. Or fall apart.
Absolutely. I don’t love our points haul after 7 games but it’s clear we are better than last season. We need to be patient and trust that results will improve if we keep playing as we are (minus that atrocious 2nd half against Brighton).

100%. With the control we had in the first half should have been at least 3-0 at half-time at a minimum. Regardless, at 2-0 you know they are going to come at you the second half and even when they score you need to know how to adapt.
And knowing how to adapt comes from the manager, he did nothing. That result was not 100% on the players. The failure was a collective failure. Not making subs (and then the wrong subs) until the 80th minute, standing there just shaking your head in silence, then the numerous defensive errors from the players. An absolute clusterfuck from players and manager.

VDV is praised because he can run fast but the rest of his game is not great . Apparently we have two top centre backs but let in 63 goals last season…….doesnt add up.
I don’t think how many goals a team concedes tells you much about the quality of their centre-backs.

It’s much easier to defend well when you have a top class DM in front of you, defensive minded fullbacks on your flanks, and play in a team that prefers to play in a low block. I would argue that a team who plays like that can get away with average CBs because they are afforded so much extra protection.

by contrast, our CBs are constantly exposed. We rely on them heavily because of how we play and because they are very good.

context matters here.

Christ. What he says around 3:00 about being not wanting to be falsely rewarded by potentially bringing on subs who do change the mentality and level of application etc required to win the game is batshit. And he normally speaks so well.

Is he basically saying 'once I decide it looks like we deserve to lose, I want us to lose and I'm gonna make sure that happens'? Sure sounds ike it.
Yeah, the falsely rewarded stuff is concerning alright because that's far too ideological. He can teach players a lesson about their lack of competitiveness while also making subs and having a real-time effect on that issue.

He also bristles at the comment about a couple of good results, which suggests he was getting carried away himself that results vs Coventry and quarabag were resounding signs. We're still mid table, mate, and the gap to the top is yawning.

Hopefully lessons learned, but I've been watching this show too long to think we've turned over a new leaf.

Wouldn't mind to finish outside Europe next season.

7 games into the season and our pressing style had us knackered after 45 minutes. To many games for a to weak squad, we're always just an injury away having to play Werner ffs.

With no Europe maybe we actually can do something.

That is a terrible terrible defeat. One that shows the rest of the league just how to beat us. Put us under any pressure and we fall apart.

Horrible from every player in that second half but particular Werner, Romero and Udogie who should have their wages fucking docked.

Yet again Werner wastes an excellent chance and this time it has come to bite us. I’ve given the guy enough chances now but enough is enough. He is absolutely nowhere near good enough for us.
We are already knew this Tbf it’s just that Man U couldn’t be arsed to put us under any pressure because they don’t want to work hard. We struggle against every team that actually have a go and get in our faces.

I don’t believe it was down to a lack of substitutions or a tighter defensive formation.

It’s down to not playing like we did in the 1st half.

We didn’t win because we didn’t score 4 and we should have done. We’re not equipped to play sensibly. That would be playing to our weakness not our strength.

We caved in the 2nd half, but a different set-up wouldn’t have made any difference.

We have to learn how to keep playingfor 90 minutes and never think the game’s won till it is.

The old cliche is only a cliche because it’s so true: the best form of defence is attack.

Before today I thought the way to beat us was with a low block and fast counter attacks.

Brighton went at us and we dominated the first half. I still thought that the way to beat us was with a low block and fast counter attacks.

Then they scored, and we became shells of ourselves. Passing got sloppy, mistakes crept in, even the press seemed less coordinated and aggressive. Brighton got their tails up and we allowed them to.

Today we beat ourselves, and that is not acceptable. I do not place this Ange however, it's on the players. Noticeable drop in confidence the moment the opponents get one back, that cannot happen, we cannot be that mentally fragile. I don't know whether it is leadership or mentality but that cannot happen again. I expect, judging from his comments that he has given them a rocket after that 2nd half performance.

I don't mind if the opposition beat us, but we beat ourselves today and that is not acceptable.

I think Ange could have changed that game so easily by bringing Sarr earlier for Maddison. We missed his energy big time. Udogie looked knackered or injured as well.

If we had have done what many people think we should have done, i.e. sit back a bit, manage the game etc like every other manager would probably do, we might have won. But what Ange is saying, is that when we are consistently pressing with intensity (which is within our control), we'll still stop the oppostition. It's not about sitting back, managing the game etc. We need to keep the intensity and pressure, that second half we lacked energy, that's why Brighton suddenly had space, if we had maintained the energy, they would have been wide open.

Is the pressing sustainable for 97 minutes though?

I'm sure he meant something a bit different to what he actually said, or how it came across. But it was a bit odd., essentially saying that making subs to try and improve things is irrelevant if the players already on the pitch aren't doing what they should do.
Maybe he’s saying you can’t make as many subs as we needed? idk

If we have to score 4 to win games we're fucked.

We can't keep playing the same for 90 minutes, it's impossible in the Premier league, elite footballers do not run like headless chickens for 90+ minutes. That's why we're shot after 55-60 mins and crumble.

We have a fraud coach who still thinks he's celtic in a one team league with a bigger budget that the rest of the league put together....

The best form of defence is knowing how to defend and coach a football team

We def need a captain who can control the drop off on the pitch. Not sure who could do that except maybe Porro or VDV.
