If we are truly after him but he doesn't want to come this window fine, a deal should be done regardless so that he comes for next season

THB i don't see this happening

It's obviously a matter of respect for the club and not saying anything in public about a potential move, whether it's this January or in the summer.
I read somewhere that there was a little bit of 'tension' between the clubs because of Mourinho part in Lille while he was without a job and snagging Sacramento. So we could be hurting because of that and Lille being reluctant to sell.. Alleged rumors also that we're after their DOF.

It's one thing saying that when there are just rumours, another entirely if the club agrees a fee.

Gards saying on twitter that we remain interested but not for this window, and that he has a lot of suitors.

I think we're making a massive mistake if we don't try and shore up the DM position this window. It's not only a fundamental part of how Jose has always set up his teams, it's also IMO clearly the missing ingredient to get the best out of Ndombele, Lo Celso, Winks, and Gedson. Having a solid DM sitting at the base of midfield would make us both a lot more stable and free up our creative talents to express themselves.

Hopefully there are other targets in mind and Herc's bit the other day that we'd look to bring in a defensive-minded midfielder if/when Eriksen goes remains true, but being days away from the end of the window without any concrete links to specific players I just have the gut feeling that we will continue to neglect the biggest hole in the squad and that it will be majorly to our detriment as the season wears on.

I don't think this guy is a sitting DM though. Seems more in the Gedson mould. We have enough all round midfielders, we need a proper solid sitting DM.

For me a sitting DM is more suited to a three man-midfield. In a double pivot I personally prefer someone a bit more mobile with some decent passing ability, a proper ball-winner like Ndidi, Kante and Idrissa Gueye.

No matter what type of DM we're looking for, it seems all decent are either unavailable or ungettable right now any way so I think it'll be one for the summer.

We'll be saying the same in the summer. All decent DM's seem ungettable!

Well yeah but it's what Jose prefers not us. Assuming he wants a Matic, this guy isn't it.

He might have the attributes to be converted to be fair. Transfermarkt has him listed as a DM

At 20 Liverpool's Fabinho was a RB I believe, and Eric Dier was a CB. Maybe Sacramento/Campos see that as his evolution, although does sound like he has the ability to be a top box to box as well.

That said I'm sure I've read that Jose likes players with experience and physical strength and size in that position, like Matic. Dier of a few seasons ago would have been perfect for him annoyingly. Problem is we've had so few links to DMs we can't even gauge a profile that Mourinho wants. You'd think Sander Berge would fit the mould but doesn't seem to be on our radar.

This team could probably do with an old head in there to be honest while confidence is so low, but none really spring to mind unfortunately. Someone in the Cambiasso, Makelele, Davids mould, but I can't actually think of any that would be available on a short term deal.

Nor can I . It's something for the summer imo. Until then I think we'll just make do with what we have.

I saw the Lyon – Lille cup game the other day. Soumare is quite a big, sturdy player. Looked to be able to hold a dm position.

Apart from the fact we landed all our targets last summer including the best young midfielders in France and Spain.
That's funny cos I'm sure we were in for Bruno Fernandes and Dybala last summer? What about the two windows before that? Or the 20 or so before that where we have been scrambling around last minute? Do you actually think the club is good at high level player recruitment?

Dybala was opportunistic. Fernandes seems overvalued - United agree. Ndombele was our absolute first choice and we landed him. We've been rubbish in the market for a long time, all I'm saying is we did decent, but not incredible business. The argument being posited was that we wouldn't land our targets in next summer.

Had we not bought Gedson Fernandes in, I could see this still, but we’d end up with a midfield of too many similar players.
One name that was suggested, albeit I think in the wishlist thread rather than an actual link, was João Palhinha. Cursory look on YouTube, he looks a hybrid of Winks and Dier, got the size and strength of Dier, but the agility and technical skills of Winks. Dier often criticised for being too cumbersome on and off the ball, and Winks for being too lightweight. Thia guy strikes a balance, not overly quick, but quick enough and, and very agile over the ball when shielding it in close quarters, like a young Matic.
Plus we know we’re going to be linked with mostly Portuguese players for a while.

We won't land our targets because we think every player is either "over valued" (Justified or not) and because our transfer strategy is opportunistic. You said in your post we landed all of our targets in the last transfer window. We didn't do that as evidenced above. We also didn't manage to clear out the players we wanted to from the squad and came into the season with a lack of fit and adjusted players and a hangover of politics with players like Rose, Eriksen etc.

I'm not wholly disagreeing with you. But we had an active window where we brought in at least a number of our first picks. Fernandes I'll not argue over, possibly he was a first pick although some said he was back up to GLC. Dybala is just a player you had to try for at that price and was opportunistic.

Ndombele, Sessegnon and GLC were methodically pursued and bought and I hope that's a model we continue to use to consistently strengthen the squad.

I agree it's been very weak getting rid of players.

I can still see this considering Winks is made of papier-mâché and Dier is dross.
