Had we not bought Gedson Fernandes in, I could see this still, but we’d end up with a midfield of too many similar players.
One name that was suggested, albeit I think in the wishlist thread rather than an actual link, was João Palhinha. Cursory look on YouTube, he looks a hybrid of Winks and Dier, got the size and strength of Dier, but the agility and technical skills of Winks. Dier often criticised for being too cumbersome on and off the ball, and Winks for being too lightweight. Thia guy strikes a balance, not overly quick, but quick enough and, and very agile over the ball when shielding it in close quarters, like a young Matic.
Plus we know we’re going to be linked with mostly Portuguese players for a while.

Knowing us we’ll get someone with the size and strength of Winks and the agility and technical skills of Dier.

That would be your initial thought, but then it would have to be an fairly elite club for him to want to leave, and they would a) need to have £35m available and b) need a midfielder of his type (whatever that is exactly). Not sure the list is very long - in fact hard to think of any PL team that fits the bill at this specific time for one reason or another.

You said we backed away from signings where there was competition. Competition is competition whether it's 1 club or 10.

The second point you make is unrelated imo.

We're not short of players because..we back out of paying actual money or where there's competition.

I don't have enough information to know exactly where to apportion the blame between Levy and Poch for the lack of co-ordination and action over the 2018 or 2019 summer windows, probably a bit of both, but that's why we're short.

In the past 2 windows we've cut out he Nkoudous and acquired 3 quality first teamer, and 3 stellar prospects.

So our transfer business has been slowly improving I'd say, just not enough to catch up on the state we've gotten ourselves into.
