These are the ones that look just right in my opinion. I'm sure we'll mix it up numerous times throughout the season, but I think this is the most balanced lineup.

Of course, a lot still depends on Eriksen. If he stays, he probably starts, unless he doesn't commit.

Sissoko was great last year in Midfield last year I know but once the new players are up to speed how about trying him at right back?

He has all the raw ingredients, Pace, power, great engine. Not a bad crosser either. He even basically played there last year covering for Trippier.
Sissoko started his tenure here playing mainly wide right. He's not good in wide areas.

Not best XI, but I would be quite interested in seeing the below at some point later in the season. I thought we were at our best playing 3-5-2 in 17/18 and I'd be excited to see what Sess and Aurier can do in wingback roles with less defensive responsibility.

Son ------ Kane
Lo Celso Winks Ndombele
Sessegnon ------------------------------------------- Aurier
Vertonghen Sanchez Alderweireld
Lloris

If Eriksen sticks around:

==============Lloris=============
===Alderweireld=Dier=Vertonghen===
Aurier===N'Dombele==GLC=====Sess
=============Eriksen=============
=========Kane======Dele=========

If he goes:

==============Lloris==============
====Alderweireld=====Vertonghen====
==============Winks==============
Aurier===N'Dombele==GLC=======Rose
==============Lamela=============
=========Moura======Kane=========

Moura has looked great so far in pre-season and I really think he could have a great season, but the front three of Eriksen, Dele and Kane worked so wonderfully in the past, I'd love to see it again.

Agree with everything here. However I personally doubt his football intelligence for that position.

Playing any part in the defence at a high standard requires a lot of drilling and footballing understanding. To know when and when not to step up alone is not something to underestimate.

Sissoko is best when he is just allowed to do what he does, break up play which comes to him and then beast it out and pass simply to someone with more footballing ability.

Again.... personal observation.

The real important thing for me is the CM depth we now have. Last year we relied so much on Sisssoko who fortunately had a huge season for us. But in all honesty with Wanyama done, Winks out injured a fair bit and no Dembele i used to really struggle with how light we were in that area. Lo Celso and Ndombele are dream signings to add to this, i can't wait to see what we can put on the pitch and to actually have quality fresh legs coming off the bench for a change.

Plus, we actually start the season at Home, not too many people have raised just how important this will be for us.

I think when you have a squad as went have we don’t have a ‘best XI’ as we did 10 years ago when we had such little depth. Some players are better suited to different formations, and the formation may depend on our opponents and our schedule. For example, i’d pick a much different side to play at home against Brighton than I would to play away at Liverpool. Dele suits a 4-2-3-1 and needs to be close to the CF making runs into the box. If we play 4-3-3 then maybe we have other players more suited to flank Kane (e.g. Moura and Son).

If everyone was available for an average game I would pick (assuming everyone is 100% fit and bang in form).

Lloris
Aurier Toby Jan Rose
Winks Ndombele
Son Eriksen Dele
Kane

... but Sanchez, Sissoko, Moura and Lo Celso (and a fit Lamela) could easily get into that team. Also interested to see if Dier makes a better pivot in DCM for Ndombele/Lo Celso than Winks does, depends if he can recapture his pre-injury/illness form from 2 years ago.

We have so many options in every formation it’s actually crazy. I’d currently say we have 9 players that can play in a 2 man CM. And if you take wanyama out I’d say you’ve got 8 very good options. It’s not like 8 and we are scrapping to find them. Probably goes to 10 with a 3 man CM as Sessegnon could added. 4 or 5 that could play tip of a diamond. 6 viable CB options 7 with Tanganga we really are in very good shape.

Most people's posts seem to focus on the players and then getting them into a formation but I'd be interested to hear people's views about our best (average) formation? I personally still like the 4-2-3-1 but can we get away with this formation with no DM as putting Dier/Wanyama into the 11 takes a spot away from a really top player. I think Winks and Ndombele can have the discipline to play the 2 but do they have enough physicality?

I think we now have the players to play a 4-3-3 but that leaves some top attacking talent on the bench. Not convinced by the 4-4-2 diamond we have trialled in pre-season as again that normally requires a dedicated DM rather than deep lying playmaker or box to box type. Difficult difficult! Thoughts?

Would a winks ndombele and GLC midfield work, I don’t really know loads about how GLC plays but if poch wants to play a diamond could those 3 be our midfield going forward or not?

Not sure about a diamond, and haven't seen much of Lo Celso, but all 3 of those can move the ball forward and quickly.

If Eriksen is leaving, or not playing as much then I am holding we see a lot of those 3.

Just need Moura and Son (when back) running down the channels looking for the ball.

I see 3 different formations suited for Tottenham.

1. 4-2-3-1
This is the current formation that works best for Spurs and it is the one that gets the best from Eriksen.

2. 4-3-3
This is a formation Spurs could adopt if Eriksen leaves. Lo Celso to work with Ndombele, and one of Sissoko/Winks in CM.

3. 3-4-3 or 3-4-1-2 or 3-3-1-3
This is the 3 centre back system with advancing wingbacks. This is could be tailored made for Ryan Sessegnon skill set. The right wingback is still a problem area to fill. A left field solution at right wingback could be Moussa Sissoko. He seems perfect for an inverted wingback role should Pochettino want to adopt Bielsa's 3-3-1-3 formation.

#1

Just use that as a default unless there’s a good reason not to

Kane works best in that system
Our CMs work best in that system
Our AMs, especially Eriksen, work best in that system

I’m not sure why we move away from it so often

Probably some version of this.

A bit surprised that Son seems to be left out quite often. Given starter for me.

Feel a bit bad leaving Sissoko out, but far from certain he can replicate last year. Already looked a bit more human again against Villa (very poor at times).

Our best 11 is really, really good and I doubt there is any club that has a considerably better first 11. Issue is whether we'll ever see them play together at the same time when all is fit and in their best stride.
