Adebayor.....no seriously, I'm not joking. He was brilliant last year, his goal/assist tally shows it.

Fuck me I hope Vertonghen doesn't follow in Ade's footsteps when it comes to 2nd seasons.

Good point. Ade really was fantastic last season.

I think in recent years I'd add VDV as he certainly didn't disappoint. I also remember Carrick doing well in his first season with us. Going further back I'd say Barmby made one hell of an impact. I thought that kid (I say kid...he's older than me) was going to be something special.

Lloris will turn out to be our best signing this season. IMO he is as good as Bale but keepers dont get the credit they deserve (I used to be a keeper lol)

Couldnt believe it when we were linked with him, Couldnt beleve it even more when we signed him. The guy has everything. Truly world class, wouldnt swap him for anyone in the prem.

Lennon had one of the best debut seasons ever considering his transfer slipped under the radar somewhat
Yes. I was gutted when Routledge did his foot in Korea - looked very lively. The rest, as they say, history. What a fecking signing!

And yes, great shout on Ade. He was a G-D animal at times last season.

Trying to remember how Lennon did in his first season. Pretty sure he was one of the most hyped players in the country at the beginning of his Spurs career.

Got a WC spot if I recall and was subsequently blamed by all the media as the sole reason for the abysmal showing of the England team.

I don't see how Vertonghen warranted a position in the team of the year. He either looks like Ledley King or like Chris Perry. I do think he will have a better year next year and playing at CB week in week out as opposed to being moved about every other week will benefit him. Maybe a settled partner in Kaboul will help too.

In terms of best debut seasons, I'd say Berbatov has to be a contender.

I think he has been very good this season no doubt, again if looking at the game from a purely statistical prospective the whoscored model of analysis he is good enough to be placed in the European team of the season, although he is sort of squeezed into the left back slot.

However, personally I do think he has made a few to many mistakes to normally warrant a place in the team of the season but the PL has had no outstanding CB this season and Vertonghen as actually shown himself to be probably the best CB in the league out of a list of CBs who have all been good but have made mistakes this season.

You're getting confused with 2010, In 2006 he was used as an impact sub and did very well. Many calling for him to be started ahead of Beckham but Erickson stuck to his guns. In the last game he came on and played well but was subbed after Rooney got sent off.

Ah yes. England failures at WCs tend to blend together seemlessly I guess.

Even Kompany have been rather off colour this season and that guy is money (yeah, just like it's 2001 again).

Vertonghen is wayyyyy overrated. He's good, and I'm glad we have him but he's not one of the 2 best CBs in the league.

Klinsmann, Van der Vaart and Berbatov are the obvious ones

Modric took months to settle when we bought him

Nick Barmby was outstanding when he first came into the team, should never have left Spurs he was never the same player.

Barmby was so talented, he was my favourite player as a kid. My dad thought he was going to be the next big thing, said that his intelligence at 18 was already as good as Sheringham's.

Speaking of Teddy, Sheringham's first season saw him finish as the league's top scorer in fact, so he definitely had a great debut season.

Aaron Lennon had an amazing debut season and was one of the main reasons why we so nearly clinched our first CL qualification, hence going from unknown quantity to England World Cup Squad within 9 months.

Klinsmann, Berbatov and Van der Vaart are obvious names to mention, while this year Vertonghen and Lloris have to be counted (Dembele would have if he'd carried his early season form through till the end). Last sesaon wasn't the season in which Kyle Walker made his debut, but he did make his breakthrough really and finished up as young player of the year. Michael Dawson had a great first season, and alongside King was a huge reason why we nearly qualified for CL. I know we signed him in the previous January, but he only broke into the side in the final few games once Naybet was injured so 05/06 we have to go with his first full season really. I think that season is still our best defensive record in the Premier League era. The previous season Paul Robinson had a phenomenal debut season, cementing his place as England number 1.

Overall I think I'd give it to either Klinsmann, a foreigner meant to be on the downward spiral who came into the Premiership when it was far harder to integrate players from abroad and was the best player in the league, winning double player of the year, or Lennon, who came in as a very cheap, young back up to Routledge of all people and finished the season as one of our best players and an England international.

Oh who am I kidding, Ginola all the way. He came in, carried a team that should have been relegated, and lit up WHL with his beautiful football at a time when it was a bloody miserable place to be (and didn't even have all its stands in tact). That was my first season with a season ticket, I was just shy of 12 when the season started, and I fell in love with the guy, to this day still the greatest entertainer I've seen in a Spurs shirt.
