Rodrigo Bentancur has been given a seven-match domestic ban by the Football Association for using a racial slur about team-mate Son Heung-min.

Bentancur, who has also been fined £100,000, was charged by the FA in September after comments made while appearing on TV in his home country of Uruguay in June.

Will be fascinating to see who he trusts to replace him as the #6 in the team.
My heart hopes to see Gray given his chance while my head cant see a suitable fixture for him in the games coming up.

Can someone point out what the racial slur was as I can't see it.

Not sure if this is a joke as its been going on since the summer and it's gone straight over my head, but if not, Bentancur made a joke about Son along the lines of 'They all look the same' so this was viewed as being a slur towards all Asians and not just a personal joke towards Son.

Feels like the club is way more punished than Bentancur, who just picks up his salary for resting his body on the weekends, while the club will probably lose out on more points and probably a lot of money (Europe or not Europe)

Agree, there should be a clause in his contract that he’s not paid when under this type of ban(all players not just him).

But then I can remember Poch saying that players were paid to train not play.

Presuambly that was a completely different point about players not having an automatic right to play. If he's not contributing anything for reasons that are his own fault then he shouldn't be paid.

Okay but I’m not sure that should be deemed as a racist slur. As another poster has said what happened with the Chelsea guy that said far worse. I fear we are once again we are being punished while others simply walk away scot free. Where is the consistency. Fernandez comment's were worse than Benni’s. Rodri also allegedly made a racial comments but no action from the FA. Their stance doesn’t add up in my opinion. Could it be Chelsea and City would have dragged this through the courts and the FA didn’t have the stomach for the fight whereas good old Spurs will just roll over and accept it.

It's all political and down to the governing bodies.

I completely agree in terms of other player's comments but it's been confirmed that when Bentancur made his comments, he hadn't been released by the club for international duty at that stage and therefore was still under the club's remit, which is governed by the FA. It is the FA that is punishing him.

The other comments, chanting, singing, etc has all taken place on international duty. This is therefore governed by Fifa and it is them who haven't taken any further action against the players.

All inconsistent but as above, it's the politics of it all as to where the punishment has come from.

There is an article somewhere that explains it better so will see I can find it again

And there's even suggestion that his comments were given sarcastically to the interviewer who was referring to Son as "The Korean", and meant as a way of pulling them up on their language and inferences. Which then comes down to translation, interpretation, and context.

So it feels pretty harsh all around, despite the minimum punishment for a guilty verdict being 6 matches.

Interesting, as I didn’t appreciate they had a minimum punishment (obviously wasn’t the case when the delightful John Terry received 4 games for shouting a racist obscenity at Anton Ferdinand).

And to your first point, the ban only applies for an ‘aggravated breach against a player, manager or technical area occupant’. So I would absolutely argue that it wasn’t directed at a player.

Strange that they deemed this 1 level up from minimum too.

Finally, that clause has a potential massive loophole. If a ref/asst ref isn’t in the technical area and is racially abused, there is no sanction! Maybe it’s dealt with elsewhere in the guidelines but struck me as odd.

Seems like an excessive punishment to me.(n)
Yes, all agree, but I was verbally attacked by a member who thought he should be given a much stronger punishment in a previous post. So I guess there are many who agree with the decision -especially if your not a spurs fan.

How do you now he will be picking up his salary?

The club (if they have not already) will take action as well.

Whether the club lose points or not is an irrelevance given the seriousness of his racist remarks, and the damage it has done to the image of the club as a whole.

Club have appealed against length of ban. This will result in 6 games instead of 7 should we be successful, as 6 is the minimum for this charge.
No doubt some will find this pointless for the sake of 1 game but I see the logic. Given the circumstances, anything above the minimum seems harsh.
