Chelsea consider £5m swoop for Spurs left-back Assou Ekotto

PUBLISHED: 14:57, 23 December 2012 | UPDATED: 14:57, 23 December 2012

Chelsea are weighing up a possible bid to sign Benoit Assou-Ekotto from Tottenham.
Rafa Benitez is under pressure to find a replacement for defender Ashley Cole who is set to leave after his contract ends in the summer, and the experienced Assou-Ekotto fits the bill.
Chelsea have reportedly considered launching a bid of £5million, according to Metro, for the player Spurs paid just £3.5million to sign him from Lens in 2006.

The 28-year old Cameroon international stood out as one of the best players at White Hart Lane last season, although a persistent knee injury has kept him out of Andre Villas-Boas’ plans thus far, although he will be returning soon.
Instead Jan Vertonghen has retained his place after capably standing in for the injured defender and Kyle Naughton, who is predominantly a right-back, has also played on the left.
Chelsea have been linked with Southampton’s Luke Shaw, but the 17-year old’s arrival at Stamford Bridge would mean the club were left with two young left-backs in Shaw and Ryan Bertrand.

We wouldn't accept that money, and seeing as the relationship between their board and ours is ice cold, I doubt we would sell to Blue Scum either.

He's always said it's about the money for him so I wouldn't be too surprised, but I would be annoyed if it was Chelsea.

It's from the mail which means its fabricated bullshit, missing any quotes to substantiate it in order to sell papers or get people clicking onto their site.

Apologies as I did not look to see who wrote this, but someone mentioned in the ITK thread about BAE going to PSG.

I'm not sure if it was a quote from a person deemed as ITK, but nonetheless I think it could potentially make some sense.

Top, top journalism from the Mail.
Because Chelsea are so popular with our fanbase I'm surprized we'd ask for a transfer fee.
I've got a feeling this won't happen.

Ever since little Danny was stopped in his motor when the Modric stuff first started and he give it 'We won't be selling our best players' it seems to be happening more and more

Latest ITK says he has been fit for a while, if true you have to ask why he hasn't been involved

This is not healthy for the team in general. Why now when we need all out good players on board.

I'm not going to get into why we should or should not sell him (I don't think we should by the way), but I am curious as to what would be a reasonable fee that we would receive for him. Benny's a quality LB in a world where established ones are pretty hard to find or are readily available.

If we are going to go and sell off Benny, there really needs a hefty fee in it for us (not 5m) and we need to invest back into a LB of the future in the event Rose is not sufficient. I'd like to see Massadio Haidara come here to provide that cover/upside in the event Rose falters.

Bollox, I'm sure we can get Warnock for a bargain

IMO Rose is having one of the top 3 seasons for LBs in the Premier League this season. Not that he is a top 3 LB, but he's in very good form.

I'd like to see him back here given a chance if BAE leaves. Benny is my favorite player and it would hurt a lot to see him leave. I sincerely hope he stays, and if he must go, anywhere but Chelsea.

Always bugged me that he hadn't been mentioned for first team or the u21s. Boy we need him
