I am not really a Ben Davies fan but he did grow into the game after a shaky start. I thought that Joses comment prior to the game about having Ben back to do the job that he does, was rather telling. Jose knows that Davies has limitations and I don't see him as our first choice LB next season, but for the time being he can do a 'job' for the team.
I don’t agree with your interpretation. Jose has commented several times about Davies being key to his tactical system and it being a shame he got injured as soon as he joined. He likes unbalanced full backs so Aurier is given license to get up field and Davies does the job of being the solid defensive FB who creates a back 3. That what he meant about having Davies back

Thought he did well considering he was out for around 3 months.

Impressed that he managed the full 90 minutes as well.
Definitely! It takes a good few games to get up to match speed but for a comeback game he did really well. Fits that tucked in LB role perfectly :) things are slowly shaping up nicely

He still got forward a couple of times and I don’t think we really played that three man defence as obviously yesterday as we have previously under Mourinho. I think the manager just likes him because he’s a defender firstly.

Solid game, good block on the line. Should have had an assist too when he broke forward and squared it.

Good game for him to build on, think he will thrive in Jose system and I am happy to have him back in the squad.

Same old as far as I'm concerned and personally I'd worried what's happened if he became so integral part. His work for the first goal, player shrugs him off, chests it down, turns runs and leaves him with ease. If that's a Foyth or a KWP there are endless posts on here about them being bullied and not up to it etc. The block on the line, credit for being there but the player managed to hit him when he had the whole goal to aim at. After that he was relatively neat and tidy, as usual, and defensively he did alright but is completely fucked whenever anyone runs at him/he has to get into a foot race, as usual.

This is wrong on a number of points. He gets turned initially for the goal (good play from el Ghazi in my opinion) but gets back and gets something on the cross, it was really unlucky that the touch made it into a more dangerous ball than it otherwise was. For the Luiz chance he obviously didn’t have the whole goal to aim at did he, since he hit it on target and it didn’t go in. It was a great block. Other then that he was defensively solid, assured in possession (not giving the ball away against the press is an important skill) and decent going forward, the highlight being the superb give and go with Bergwijn and great cut back to Dele that should have led to a goal. We’ve got a lot bigger problems then left back if Davies is there

He is very clever with his positioning a lot of the time and knows how to close down an angle.

One of Villa's attacks he forced their player to shoot by backtracking away from him just enough to cover the angle for the ball on the outside to a player in a better position. He also did as much going forward in his brief moments than Aurier did the entire game.

I think he will become a mainstay in Jose's team and will improve as a player under his tutelage.

Just to add to what you've said. It was also his first game back from a long, serious injury.

I think he's very underrated by a lot of Spurs fans.

He was first choice left back during the second half of that spectacular 2016/17 season so I’m not that worried if he is considered integral tbh...

I watched the a bit of the Newcastle game after ours and Rose’s performance versus his performance against Villa was chalk and cheese. Rose looked like he did for us over the last year, past it at this level. Davies was much better.

Really like Davies. Model professional. Knows his limitations and not at all flashy but always puts in a good shift and don’t think he gets the credit he deserves.

Also, handsome man.

So underrated. The system Mourinho favours suits his profile down to an absolute tee.

Found his best position as an tucked in LB, means he doesn't have to constantly go on the overlap and can tuck in, suits him perfectly.

He’s a committed, determined player who is not eye catching but is far more intelligent and comfortable in possession than he gets credit for. Good game tonight.
