Lo Celso wasn’t in the game too much but at times you could see just how good he will be for us, time seemed to slow down for the build up to the goal. Sessegnon looks dangerous which is a real positive.

Was a shame that Dier was rubbish again, looks well off the pace. Moura was completely out of the game. Eriksen and Rose just don’t give a fuck any more, which is painfully obvious. We need to reward that with moving them out of the first team squad tbh. KWP was left awfully exposed on the right, There was some decent defending on show at times but he was a bit too easy to bully and overall it was a poor performance. Not what the lad needs if he wants to make it here

I've just watched the whole game without knowing the score. Frankly I wish I hadn't.

I would've liked us to put pressure on the ball when they had it and to track runners. In fact, it would have been nice if we had bothered to do either one of those things instead of alternating between staying static in a shape that Bayern moved around and through at will, or milling around in a fairly confused state.

A couple of things have confused me. The BBC report says that Sessegnon was our best player and that he did himself no harm in competing for a first team place. Perhaps they were confusing him with Alphonso Davies, Bayern's 19-year-old who was impressive throughout in both defence and attack. As far as I could see, Sessegnon did a couple of nice touches and scored a good goal, but was left chasing shadows and lost every challenge with a Bayern player. Still, it's early days for him.

The other thing that I find confusing is our (well, Gazzaniga's) continual floating of high balls towards a striker six inches shorter than his marker with nobody near to pick up any second ball. We may as well have just lobbed it gently to Thiago to start another Bayern attack as that was what invariably happened.

If anything, that was worse than the display in the 7-2. True, we caved in then while we didn't here (although if it wasn't for Gazzaniga and the woodwork they could easily have had double figures), but at least then we played fairly well for a while. Today was just embarrassing. I know we left four at home (two of whom are actually good) and we have six injured, but the team that played was good enough to compete; and they just didn't. Let's hope for an improvement before the next round.
I think you're forgetting that we had at leats 3 one-on-ones. It wasn't as one sided as the stats suggest. It was also very clear that JM identified their high line as their biggest weakness and wanted to exploit it. It worked on several occassions.

This felt more like a preseason friendly
a very bad preseason friendly... near mid season and some players are unfit and others simply 'crap'.
This squad really needs refreshing with better players and fit for the Mourinho system

We got outplayed by Bayern. Not a good game at all. Mourinho wanted to test the other players. Doing so against a team like Bayern is not good.

Why not? The game meant nothing and it was a CL-game at the same time. This was a perfect opportunity to experiment and give youngsters a taste of the level required.

Sadly, he didn't. He knackered more than half of the first team needlessly in a meaningless game just to save his own image from a negative scoreline, he didn't give an opportunity to so many 2nd string/youth players desperate to get a look in, and still achieved a shit result in the end and now more than half the team is knackered for the must win v Wolves on Sunday ? Who for sure won't be stupid enough to play any 1st teamers our tonight in their Europa dead rubber :banghead:

Knackered is saying much. The tempo really wasn't all that for us. And they didn't need to travel to Kazahstan did they?

Low and hard shots that are close to him, he's not agile enough to stop them...Hugo throws out a leg and stops most of them

Put the two together and we would have a top gk. I think Lloris's days are numbered due to his inability to distribute and kick long and safe.

Goodness me some of you are embarrassing.

He rested players, and we did better than the full strength side at home. Yeah it wasn’t a great performance, but important minutes for some squad players, and important rest for Kane, Dele etc.

Dier was poor, yes, but Jose is clearly trying to play him into fitness and sharpness, which when Wanyama is the only other legitimate option is sensible. Let’s not forget that Dier isn’t overcoming a minor injury, but close to a year out after two operations, severe appendicitis, and then immune system issues. The guy needs time and a bit of slack. At least he is trying when not performing.

Absolutely nothing game. Nothing really learned from it beyond Sessegnon being a talent and Celso seeming tasty.

Agree with the posts above.

Dier could need a run of a dozen games before he starts to find real match sharpness after such a long lay off.

Some people are so fucking impatient. And the writing off of GLC was honestly embarrassing last night.

Mourinho is trying to get Dier back to where he was. It might not happen but he's giving him the chance.

I agree with the giving Dier a chance and I think it is good man anagement of a player, who if fit, could well become a very important squad player for us again. Should he be a starter? Well small steps, once he really is fit and sharp, why not. Until then, we have to hope that Mourinho finds the best opportunities to do so. Against a virtually full strength Bayern in a dead rubber, is precisely one of those games.

Bayern have however, like Man United did, shown exactly what type of game we really struggle with, direct and fast, with balls into spaces where our full backs are. We hardly touched them and despite the couple of one on ones, were never in this game. On another night Bayern score 7 again.

We must find away to deal with this type of game. I believe if memory serves, in the past we bullied midfields with Dier and Wanyama, and held the ball better with Dembele! And there lies the rub. Our ball retention in the middle of the park has become erratic at best. We were set-up for ball retention and when we didn't have it, bullying counter press. This tired opponents and demoralised them. Now we give the ball away too cheaply and are ourselves either too quick and imprecise, or slow and ponderous and invite pressure.

I really think what we need is a midfiled player who you just cannot take the ball off. Someone who the opponents double or triple mark and still don't get the ball back. That compsure that can ensure that any counter press is negated (as much as possible). Now it could be that Ndombele is that player with a little more passing (and a little less ball retention), but his fitness so far has been sub par.

Winks and Dier both can be harrassed into mistakes, into sloppy backwards passing that pushes the pressure onto the defenders, who in turn are either overrun or play risky balls forwards which the opponents defence win and recycle. Sissoko is harder to bully, but his end product is erratic at the best of times and often terrible.

But all of that is right now secondary to the culling that must happen with players who are not lookng to be here long term. Eriksen and Rose have both been great in the past, I applaud their past efforts and wish thm no malice, but last night showed they should no longer be with us full stop.

Moura huffed and puffed, and Lo Celso was so so, but I can't think of a single positive thing Eriksen or Rose managed all match. JJ was right, Coutino was far superior.

Thought we looked decent at the end with 4-3-3 and Skipp, Wanyama, and Sissoko shutting down the central area in front of the back four.
With Sessegnon happy to cover the LB we looked solid, turned the ball over, and created a couple of opportunities for Son.

If we get them again that would be my set up but with Harry up front on his own, and Sess/Son breaking.

Skipp and Sess were definite positives and should be getting pushed into sub/rotational roles based on that.

Foyth did well enough too.

Not going to comment on the negatives as we all know who/what they are which is why they were playing in a dead rubber.

Surely a midweek match in Germany isn't going to knacker half the players for a game v Wolves on the Sunday? Of the players who have been regular starters recently only Alderweireld, Sissoko and Gazzaniga played the full 90 mins.

Re the youth players I was disappointed Skipp and Parrott didn't start. Troy didn't even get a run out late in the game!
