So while we were all laughing when it was reported arsenal only had 40mil budget. They have went and boought 2 new wingers, centre back, left back and good midfield loan addition. Also when Palace didnt play ball with Zaha no messing around straight and picked up Pepe. Levy will have alot to answer for if we loose ground to Arsenal.

That midfield loan addition is quoted as costing about £15-17 million for the loan fee + player's wage -about 10 months worth from August-May.

If we signed Pepe for £80M would any of us be happy? Genuine Q

No but different circumstances can determine how worthwhile a particular transfer is. If you asked the same question about Maguire I'd say no too but if I was a United fan I'd say yes.

Whether I think it's a good signing for Arsenal, I'm not sure though. I do actually think they need a player like him, despite their defence needing work too but he's had just the one standout season I think, is that right? I do think it's a lot of money for such a player. He could turn out to be a great signing and a much better choice over Zaha, but I'd be more concerned if they did spend that money on Zaha, just because I know for a fact that he can wreak havoc in the Premier League.

Look not here to wind or annoy. Im just pissed at whats happening at our own club who are im champions league but seem to faHave to laugh at everyone saying Pepe is unproven in the premiership in response to arsenal 72mil seal. And if Cellabos who is keen to shine gets them top 4 then doesnt look such a bad loan deal does it.

They have spent the equivalent of the Zaha money on Pepe. But a lot of noise around the structure of the deal, that it is either structured as five separate transfers which was mentioned by another poster [who I asked about this but didn't reply back to me] which would maybe avoid FFP [This is me guessing] or that this deal has been paid for through a third party finance co. which was mentioned by another poster and if they have financed this deal that would suggest they don't have the money and that they are taking an even greater gamble.

But back to Pepe, is he better than Son and Moura, both of these guys have done it this league and the champions league no one knows yet what Pepe will do.

Anyway I don't see how buying a player that doesn't address your glaring problems actually improves you.

Yeah they're apparently paying £20m up front and the rest in instalments, something that Palace would never have accepted.

I have no idea if Pepe is, I'd be surprised if he gets as good a return in goals as Son in particular has done for us, but I just think it's up in the air at the moment.

I see what you're saying but Aubameyang, Lacazette and Pepe at least looks much better on paper than those former two and Iwobi. I think addressing other areas but not the defence as much as they need will only get them so far, but it will get them further than they would have been without those additions. It may just allow them to get away with those problems more.

You'd think they'd be going all out to fix their defence in the remainder of the window so we'll see how they end up. Hopefully with not enough.

I was under the impression that most transfer fees are paid in installments. They're talking about it like it's some revolutionary new idea.

I don't know where the chatter came from or started but its being suggested that the fee is being paid in instalments by a third party finance co. which is very different.

Yeah, nearly everybody. Until the dream dies you'll always believe someone with Pepe's stats, and for that kind of outlay, will do really well in the Prem.

I don’t understand the ‘Pepe is better than Zaha’ chat

It’s difficult to compare. How would Pepe get on in that Palace side?
I’ve thought Zaha has been by far and away the best player outside a top 6 club for at least two seasons now.

Unless he joins a club with as much quality as Arsenal have in their side it’ll be hard to compare him with Pepe next season too, unless of course Zaha completely outperforms him despite being at Palace.

If Zaha does stay at Palace and remains fit all season, he’ll score more goals than Pepe imo. If Zaha signed for a top six club he’d have a field day and be well in double figures.

I don’t think he’s someone we need but if we made a last minute attempt to get him I’d be very pleased.

Reports that they are looking to get Coutinho on loan for two years at £27m so it looks like rather than buy they've decided to rent a team.

I heard that it was £27m for one season, not two. If it was for two seasons, for that kind of outlay I wouldn’t mind betting we’d be all over this too.....

You may be right I thought I read two years but may be wrong, either way I doubt we'd touch it.

Looking definitely like CL or bust for Woolwich and Emery this season. If he doesn’t get it he is gone but he will have to hedge his bets between the Europa League and the PL which will put a lot of strain on his squad at the back end of the season.

If they get Coutinho Ozil will probably be marginalised but it’s risky having too many loan players in your team- how will they gel, and will they really be that motivated.
Having said that for where they are at present it’s provably not a bad pint.

The small print was the killer. The proposed deal was for a £27 million loan fee for the year, and then a non-negotiable commitment to buy the player (who would then be 28 years old) at an exorbitant price.

In which case we definitely wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.
