Are we an easy target or is there a bigger agenda?

I was having a conversation earlier about the constant Spurs stories in the papers that have already been generated so far this 'summer'.

We've read stories of Gomes, Bale, Lennon, Defoe, VdV and Modric all leaving or wanting to leave or in the supposed case of Bale 'threatening to leave should others go' and it got me thinking are we an easy target for the media and if so why is it the case?

You seldom read stories of Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal players wanting out, especially not 'key players' anyway and yet here we are nowhere near the start of our pre-season schedule and we already, if the media are to be believed, are facing up to losing some huge members of our squad.

I'm of the theory that the media cream over the 'Top 4' or 'Sky 4' so much that they can't bear to see that unsettled and will go out of their way to prevent that.

Man City have come along and are so rich and 'powerful', much in the same way that Chelsea were initially under Abramovich, that the media wouldn't dare question them and therefore they are almost immune to such stories. However, we have got close, and briefly into the 'Top 4' and could potentially continue to challenge the concept in the last few years.

As a result, all of a sudden we are having to read stories about key players wanting out or being linked with members of the 'big 4' (Modric-Chelsea/Utd, Lennon-Liverpool, Defoe-Arsenal, Bale-Utd etc).

Are these just the medias methods of preserving their beloved 'Big 4 (and City)'?

I guess it would have been very quiet if we had made the top 4 again. Missing out just gives them a free summer to make up bullsh*t to unsettle our players gradually.

We have some players that a lot of clubs would want, when you combine that with our neccessary wage structure and no CL football what did people really think would happen.

Makes me laugh when so many of the people who moan about the transfer situation also complained and protested against our proposed move to Stratford. Cake and eat it springs to mind.

It's not paranoia. There are some clubs that the media just love to lay into. Spurs, Villa and to a lesser extent Arsenal all get the brunt of the media bullshit whenever an opportunity arises.

On the flipside we also get more than our fair share of praise when we do well. The media gushed over our Champion's League run...hyping us up well beyond the reality of the situation.

Many fans of other teams dislike Spurs because they see us as the media's darlings. Obviously this isn't true because they love to create rumours about the club disintergrating...but in fairness they do tend to champion our successes pretty well. The "victory of good over evil" article after we beat Chelsea in the Carling Cup final springs to mind.

Rooney? Tevez? Fabregras? Torres? Gerrard?

Fans of other teams have had to read that their players want to leave.

We're an easy target. Big fanbase to rile up, big rival fanbase to entertain & stories about our players going to other clubs in the same league are more feasible as we've not pushed up to the top level (yet).

The sports media in the UK are like an unfunny father jack...drunken, senile, stupid and spout random crap whenever they feel like it.

Even the so called 'respected' writers are total cocks.

We have a recetn history which has a very high player turnover. We have a high squad and players such as Keane, Jenas, Bentley, Hutton and Dos Santos are barely getting a game for us so naturally there are going to be stories.

Modric, VDV and Bale were three of the most talked about players last season and are an easy target for a quick story.

There's no conspiracy here. Arsenal have to put up with constant stories about Fabregas to Barcelona every summer and Liverpool have had it with Gerrard in the past.

The only difference I see about us and the others is we have about 6 top players "lined up to leave" where as they had only Gerard, or Torres, or Rooney, or Ronaldo, or Cesc. I think this is many due to us missing out on CL footy this year

Stratford was more like a dog zhite sandwich .

Just cos you are prepared to settle for second best doesn't mean everyone should be .

Put in the perspective of the clubs 128 years history and association with the borough , being prepared to wait a few more years for a stadium in Tottenham is not much of a sacrifice .

Trouble is people want everything now these days and are far too ready to sell out to get it .

History while great and noble is in the past and a burden, it has contributed sweet F-A to our current predicament. Will Modric go, "Fine i'll stay for life since you have great history"? No.

A stadium in Tottenham is like offering a family of 8 a 3 bedroom house with no garage, garden or room to expand. We will always be limited to 56,000 seats at WHL. At the Olympics we can get 80,000 or even 100,000 in the future. That is a HUGE sacrifice!

24,000 x £65 = £1,560,000 per home match (assuming none are corporate)

When Piers Morgan was editor of The Daily Mirror he said he would rather put in a negative Spurs story than a positive Arsenal one. The tabloids are full of Gooners and more especially Wetspam fans. Our support are far too quick to respond to these stories and we are easy prey to radio phone ins etc. Time to remain calm and stop using bloody newsnow!!!

Realistically we are the obvious choice for these stories, reems of paper stories about the top players at Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal being enticed by other "top" clubs are not credible, individuals from time to time but rarely and ok City have Tevez and arsenal have Fabregas but these are not only exceptions they are special cases with personal reasons involved.
Other teams in the prem that are not as big as Spurs don't make as big a story when one of their players are wanted not least because they are not as high a standard as our players or because leaving Fulham to join Man Utd is not seen as an insult to Fulham fans which leaves us, Liverpool and maybe Villa.
Villa are all over the place at the moment and starting again so no real story there, Liverpool have got the king of the world in charge again and so nobody wants to leave them, plus of course they can pay big wages so in the end that leaves us as the side with top players trying to move forward and improve but can't match the top wages, we effectively slot right into the optimum sensational story box.
