I’m sorry but Bissouma should not be starting for us. Bentancur and Sarr don’t seem that great at passing either hence the need for Gomes. Our midfield does not look balanced, or controlled. It is struggles to be aggressive and win 50/50s etc. Perhaps a different coach could make them more compact and effective but we’re so far off peak Dembele and Wanyama.
I think Bentancur can pass, but hes not a metronomic figure. I'm not Bissouma's biggest fan but he is our only real defensive midfielder. A different coach can make it more compact but then you could lose something else. We have seen our midfield dominate games. We currently have tired legs that doesn't help. But yes we did once have a much better midfield than today.

Gomes in our starting eleven would have to see us evolve to a 4231.
And could suit us better with either kulusevski or Maddison at CAM and allow our fullbacks to overlap with more protection.
But would also need us to have really good 1v1 wingers.

Still feels like a signing that fits everything other than the current managers plans though (hg/ free transfer)

Lille is through to the CL round of 16 as one of the top 8; why would they sell anyone that - when not injured - is playing regularly?

get a few quid in before losing him for free in the summer? Only if the bid is sufficient and they can get a replacement in in time.

spot on. I would happily sell Bissouma and Bentancur in summer and get an upgrade. Sarr I would give him one more season

I mean gomes isn't tall but he is a decent presser. But the way I see his role is not to give those traits. We already have a lot of power. We have Sarr, Bissouma, Deki all have that in abundance.

What I see recently is that we struggle to create fluidity in midfield on occasions. With Deki often playing centrally we seem to often lack something there.

For me Gomes can play any of the roles in midfield. He could play CDM when we want control, and as the more AM position as cover. But, for me what excites me is seeing a midfield three a bit like this:

Gomes - Bissouma - Deki

Where you have the physically of Biss, the powerful running and direct play from Deki and Gomes more to help things keep ticking as well as providing those passes will still maintaining structure and a good presser that can often be lacking from madds who really wants to be playing between the lines.

For me that offers us something different and balanced. This is the thing. I do not necessarily think Gomes would play every game. When you face up against more physical midfields you can bring in sarr.

Similarly if we are ahead and need a bit of calm you can bring him on, a bit like what Hojbjerg did so well last season. He can come on, he keeps the ball and plays it sensibly. Having a player who can receive the ball under pressure and find the right pass is an invaluable skill. We could do with that in our team.

Does he have that physicality, maybe not. But we wouldn't be signing him to give that physicality and personally I don't think our midfield lacks physicality. It lacks poise, things can often get very frantic. Gomes has that, someone who can find calm in chaos.
My issue with that is, Bissouma is not a consistent player. Nor is Sarr, though that might change with time as he’s still young.

Bissouma needs replacing, and not, int my opinion, by Gomes.

I guess the question whether or not we think adding Gomes and Cardoso to replace Bissouma and Bentancur makes us better.

Good point mate! But what if those few quids are about the same as the step up in payment for CL advancement to the quarterfinals?

Lille is also one of 5-6 teams fighting behind PSG for CL and European qualification from Ligue 1. That is also worth a good lump of money.

I wouldn’t trust our owners and people in charge to be able to get someone in, ready to go.

But, as far as I’ve understood, Lille has been really good at recruiting and selling over the last years. So not impossible!

Great screenshotting.

As I always say, best to finish on Brest.

Nothing we don't already know but if we want him for the summer, get him on a pre contract

I know some might be underwhelmed by him but really would be pleased if we got ahead of Summer business and agreed to a pre-contract with him. Especially knowing the small bonus of any HG angle (why the Guehi links don't surprise me either)

Get Gomes, let Bissouma go and put the money towards a midfielder that is more defensively intellige t/physical.

In the summer of course

Just get a proper 6 in. City have managed it with Gonzalez so there are players like that out there, we just need to find the right talent ID.

Have to be honest I really do not see the attraction with Gomes. I’m not sure he has the ability to be a top player in the premier league.
Against very average nations for England he looked half decent but against top level premier league midfielders, I think he will get bullied quite easily.

Personally think this falls into the “opportunistic free signing” category.

Onyedika at Bruges

also lamine camara at Monaco (replaced Sarr at Metz). Not sure he’s a 6 but he’s a big talent
