Ange Postecoglou backed as Tottenham eye summer deals

North London club are trying to bring in at least one outfield signing this month plus Southampton winger and England midfielder in July

Tottenham Hotspur will spend this week trying to hand under-pressure head coach Ange Postecoglou a transfer boost and the club are attempting to accelerate plans for the summer to avoid another slow-moving window.

Southampton winger Tyler Dibling and Lille midfielder Angel Gomes are two players Spurs have held talks over as they attempt to set up deals for the summer window, and they are also trying to secure at least one new outfield signing this month.

Postecoglou admitted that he would desperately like at least one new player through the door before the transfer window shuts next Monday to help him get through the next 10 days to two weeks, when he hopes a number of key players will start returning from injury.

Tottenham have been looking at defenders and forwards this month, but have found the January market to be extremely challenging. They are yet to make a single outfield signing.

Their interest in a loan deal for Evan Ferguson has underlined the challenge they face as the Brighton and Republic of Ireland international, who is also interesting West Ham, would be reluctant to agree a deal with Spurs in the knowledge that Richarlison is available again and Dominic Solanke will return to fitness in around five weeks.

Spurs would ideally like to sign Dibling in January but if that proves beyond them the club are also discussing trying to get an agreement in place for him to move at the end of the season.

Midfield is not an area of priority for January, but Gomes – who is out of contract at the end of the season and free to speak to clubs outside France – is a player on Tottenham’s radar.

Securing agreements for both players before the summer, or at least advancing negotiations, would put Tottenham in a strong position but they acknowledge that the next week must be spent trying to hand Postecoglou a much-needed boost.

We need a proper dm, Gomes only makes since imo if we sign a dm and get rid of both bissouma and bentancur

Can see both Bentancur and Bissouma shipped out if we find a buyer in the summer. Both with a year left, Bentancur with question marks over fitness and Bissouma not being trusted long term.

I'd still go all out for Douglas Luiz but a Gomes on a free or cheap makes sense as a HG additional midfielder, just not as the solution.

Biss out, Gomes in would be nice business. Wouldn’t address the need for a dedicated 6 however.

I think we need a real physical presence in there.

Just like when we had Wanyama/Dembele.
In a double pivot yes but less so in a 3 man midfield.

To be honest though, with so much up in the air right now it's hard to contemplate what our midfield should be moving forwards but I certainly would like it to revolve around Gray and Bergvall.

Yeah, I really like Gomes, but we’d need someone like Baleba in there next to him. Not sure Luiz is that kind of physical presence either?

I do wonder if we are better situated for a double pivot, and more of a 4231 set-up.

Long-term

Bergvall Gray

Seems a shame if we are going to push Bergvall and Gray into a single position.

Seen some conflicting reports around Gomes - what is his best position or can he play all three?

Doesn't seem too physical but very technical. Yet I see some saying he excels in a press-resistant 6 position, where he can get on the ball a lot. I could see him (as others mention) next to a more physical 6 where he can dictate tempo in a b2b role, or is he best as a Maddison alternative? Someone a bit more rounded overall but still creative?

Interesting link though

He's an odd fit for me. Not sure we really have the need for a 5ft5 deep lying playmaker who isn't particular strong nor that good defensively.

I think we really need a physically imposing technical astute B2B sitting next to Kulu/Maddison (AM) and Biss/Gray (DM). We already have Bergvall who is more a progressive CM all be it he does it by ball carrying rather then passing like Gomes. Gomes is much better dictating play from deeper as a CM or DM so bringing him in as an AM doesn't make sense ether even tho i know he can play there.

I could see him going to Utd to replace Eriksen who plays more of a deep tempo setter for them.

Like him as a player but not sure how he'd fair in the PL and struggle to see the fit but I get that we are desperate and beggars can't be choosers. Still, if he wasn't on a free i'm not sure we'd be interested and if we were then i'd assume we were looking to change the balance of our midfield. Which isn't a bad thing but one would think more physicality rather then less would be the way forward atm.

Thats not backing. Ange likely wont be here in the summer.

We have Bentancur - I wouldn't be surprised to see Gray and him be our number 6 cover.
I don’t think bentancur is the right fit for that position imo but actually thinking about it, considering we’re very very unlikely to be in Europe next season just those 2 will probably be enough

correct it’s just asset building. Getting Gomes free is an instant £50m player and of an ok age. Doesn’t help Ange one bit or our situation and what if we get relegated. Does he still come.

It's always the way. We all see through this nonsense now and its so so boring

Other top clubs do it too.
But they do it to offset the good players they buy.
We actually play the freebies 🤣
