Just heard the commentator mention yet another failed Townsend run. Sounds like he's having a 'mare.

Just really not sure if this boy is going to make it. He really seems to lack a footballing brain. Not sure whether to keep trying or cash in.

Well it certainly appeared that the stiff neck that affected him Saturday and forced his head up has cured and he was back to his head down, tear along with the ball until he disappeared up his own arse or shot wide style of play
It was certainly a disappointing performance and one that make a £10 mill offer look very generous

I posted this last Sunday and everything about his performance tonight is exactly what I, and some others, have been saying repeatedly.

AT plays football for himsel for his own glory and there lies the problem he wants to be the main man and unfortunatley thats probably more than anything whats stopping him from progressing.

He had a similar performance to Lamela's against WHam. It's the start of the season.

He's still playing the same way and I'll keep saying it until he starts getting his head up and putting the teams needs before his own.

The day he starts doing that I'll be the first to acknowledge it and praise him for it but I'm not going to ignore how frustrating his game is in the mean time.

I like him, he comes across really well. But he's exceptionally greedy on the pitch and he doesn't possess that world class talent you need to get away with that at times either.

In any case the best players invariably make the right decisions. Andros rarely does at the moment.

There is a European-competition quota - a certain amount of players in the squad have to have been developed at the club - not just HG, but specifically club trained.
Yes, we need 4, but it is like the HG rule where we could have a 24 man squad and 3 club trained players (or a 21 man squad and 0 club trained).

They only have to have played at the club for 3 years before they turn 21. FYI Lennon also counts.

Yeah I know that but, I thought he was talking about development. Home grown is effectively any player that has played at an English club for 3 years before they are 21 no? It doesn't matter what club I thought
Schneiderlin is HG as was (and still is for that matter) Siggy because of that

Or am I getting on the wrong track here?

Edit-just seen this European thing above

I wonder how long the list of excuses for Townsend will run.

Eventually it will boil down to, "he came from our academy, therefore he should play over players that outperform him".

I actually think he's out of control and has no ability to stop himself rampaging towards goal in search of a spank into the stands.

It just seems he'll never grow out of it now, it's such a bad habit.

He's trying to force his career instead of just easing into it. No patience; it's just his personality it would seem.

He's like a hyper, untrainable, forever-bounding puppy.

I have always said the difference between a good player and a great player and a world class player is decision making. When Ronaldo 1st came to uk he was a good player but his decision making was poor and he made the right decision about 60% of the time he then developed and matured and made the right decision about 98-99% of the time and became world class. Townsend makes the right decision about 50% of the time. BUT HAS NOT IMPROVED. He also seems to lack the capacity to change as this has been the same for years. As I said previously if someone offers 10mil plus snap their hand off

It's more about the lack of development he has shown in the last 18 months that's frustrating. We're willing him to be a success but with each passing game, we really need to consider if 10m is a good price and we part ways

Think there's some truth in what u say: 'forcing his career...no patience...hyper....'
Coupled with his betting - ? addiction - and fact he lost his older brother at a young age, and the plethora of clubs he's been shipped out to, maybe he could do with some proper counselling... I want him to succeed. Be sorry to not give him an opportunity under Poch but if he's not in the plans then so be it...

A lot of interesting and disparate views. In my view AT offers infinitely more than Lennon and has a valuable place in the squad. He provides pace and directness that can be invaluable late on in games, as with Wham game, and more end product than Lennon (who is clearly his main competition in the squad)
He also seems to be one of the guys
who has really helped with the team spirit and cohesion (see Twitter banter with bobby), whic ish one of the things we have lacked for a few years.
So sure if we found a worldly left winger to come in and some one offers 10m lets take it, but until then don't see any point in shipping him out.

I don't subscribe to the idea that you can't improve decision making, and think he has done so in pre-season games. I want to see if Poch can work improve him over the next 6 months and will be rooting for the lad to step up.

Didn't know he lost his brother. He is driven, for sure, maybe that's part of it; and that's great, in principle, just needs to focus that drive. Anyway, everyone can see the potential, frustrating thing they can also see he's stopping himself from realising it.

I'll be frustrated with Andros if he can't improve his game this season.

Don't see any reason/need to ship him out yet. I would rather hope that instead he can learn from playing with the likes of Lamela (in particular) and Eriksen, and recognise when to pass and when to shoot, when to take his man on, and learn how to play a clever, quick pass for once.

It's not that much to ask to be honest. Pretty much any player should be coachable to that extent.

All I ask for from Townsend is simple. I don't expect him to be the next Bale. It seems that Townsend does, but I don't. All I ask for, is that I see traces of a guy deliberately trying to change, modify and improve his approach. But he doesn't, and as long as I don't see him trying ANYTHING different, I won't enjoy seeing him play for us.
