Aston Villa v Arsenal, 7:45pm Wednesday 21 December

Arsenal's Wojciech Szczesny cannot imagine finishing below Tottenham

• Arsenal have ended season above rivals for last 17 years
• 'It means a lot to me to finish above Spurs,' says keeper

Wojciech Szczesny has assured Arsenal's supporters that they will finish the season above Tottenham Hotspur, saying "it's not in our vocabulary" to consider coming in behind them. Arsenal have not finished below their neighbours since 1994-95 although, after their 1-0 defeat at Manchester City, they trail them by five points and Tottenham have a game in hand.
Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, appeared to concede after the loss at City, which cast them 12 points off the top of the table, that a title challenge was beyond them and feels as if the battle for supremacy in London is the more realistic challenge. Chelsea, in fourth place, separate the north London clubs.
"Not getting above Tottenham isn't even something we can think about," Szczesny said. "It's not in our vocabulary. We don't want to finish below Tottenham, no matter what. That's the mentality here. That's just my personal ambition to do that. I'm one of the fans. So it means a lot to me to finish above Tottenham. And we will do so."
Szczesny said after Tottenham's 2-1 north London derby victory at White Hart Lane on 2 October, when he blamed himself for letting in Kyle Walker's winning goal from long range, that Arsenal were a better team and Tottenham would endure a difficult period at some point. Spurs are on a run of good form, having taken 34 points from an available 39, but Szczesny still says that Harry Redknapp's team will stutter and Arsenal will take advantage.
"They've been on good condition, you have to give that to them," the goalkeeper said. "But I'm confident we are a better side and will finish above them. They look good at the moment but hopefully … not hopefully … they will drop points in the second half of the season."

Whatever happened to us being a small club and their real rivals being United

I am pretty damned certain that a couple of seasons ago they said that it showed how small a club we were that the height of our ambition was to finish above them :hump:

They are a good side, as are we, and I much prefer players who actually care about the clubs they play for. I think Wilshere is a knob but he really cares and is always giving us stick.

It will be very tight and in all honesty I think it will depend on injuries and who can beat the lesser sides most consistently. They have just had a great run where they have taken 27 from the last 29 points and yet they are just as far behind us as they were before that run started!

We have beaten them 3 times in a row and this gives us the edge imo.

They did, I'm pretty certain of that.

It shows how much there mentality has changed, that now they see finishing above us as the main focal point of the season for them. Surely they have not offically written off there title ambitions already :)

That rather gave away his lack of confidence about overhauling us, didn't it?

Loved it when I read this. So small-time. If any of our players came out saying their ambition this season was to finish above Arsenal I'd be furious.

I never really bought the 'Spurs aren't our really rivals' bullshit. I never saw Thierry Scum**** Henry or Patrick Mega**** Vieira, or Robert Biggest **** in the Universe Pires celebrate more than when they scored against us or beat us, and I never saw them more riled up than against us.

I never bought into it, either...but it didn't stop their dung-heap smelly, mentally infirm supporters from repeating it over and over again...not because they believed it, but because it was a way to insult us and assert their dominance.

Fortunately, as I said above, they spouted all that shit about how pathetic we were because all we could focus on was finishing above them, and now all they can focus on is finishing above us

Wish they were playing someone half decent rather than Villa, who are a seriously turgid team under McLeish, their passing is abysmal.

They'll batter Aston Villa, so would we like...Villa are just dog shit.

Nice to see that the wheel has turned full circle after Bergkamp stated a few years ago that the NLD had no significance.

I hope Harry sticks this article on the dressing room / training ground walls and uses it to motivate our players.

We need to finish above them this season just to see them cry.

The power is shifting in North London.

They must be terrified every time Van Persie goes down injured
