I've been a member of Spurs Community for a long time and needless to say Spurs Chat has always been a place where you can find some solid, well thought out analysis of any Spurs game but as we all know, it's well known for it's knee jerk reactions to losses. However, what I'm seeing after this West Ham defeat is nothing short of utter madness.

How can 90 minutes of football flip everything on it's head in quite such alarming fashion amongst our fans? Before this game kicked off, we were sat 3rd in the table after 7 games and had the best defensive record in Europe. I believe we had also lost 1 game in the last 17 or something along those lines.

There's no two ways about it. Yesterday was clearly a very poor perfomance but as the old saying goes, one swallow doesn't make a summer and so quite frankly one defeat does not ruin a season that has barely even got started!

Arsenal lost their opening game to Aston Villa at home. 2 weeks ago Liverpool lost at home to Southamton. Last week Man Utd lost at home to West Brom and got hammered by City the week before. Were all their seasons over as a result? Of course not. You'd have to be a fucking retard to think so.

Form is something that develops over time. Team chemistry is no different and there is absolutely no doubt that with the overhaul of our squad and we are still yet to really establish our best starting 11. This is going to take time and I personally feel that the 2nd half of our season will be the strongest that we've ever had but even in saying that it seems so far away.....probably because it is.....that it's barely even worth thinking about.

Losing is no different to Winning in the sense that, 1 victory does not mean you're winning the league, no matter how good it is, in the same way that 1 loss doesn't mean relegation. Sure, West Ham fans are happy as larry this morning but they still only have 8 points are in sat in 13th place. They will know full well that they aren't on the road to champions league qualification after yesterday and we need to be equally as clear about the rest of our season.

In my opinon, yesterday's result was a perfect storm of Europa League hangover (Russia isn't just a cheeky jaunt down the road ya know) questionable team selection (although most of us were saying JD deserved a start after his goal scoring exploits of late) and just overall complacency for a team that was sat in the bottom 3. We were poor on the day but has anyone considered that if Defoe scores the 1 on 1 at the start of the 2nd half, how different it all could have been?

My final point would be about Moussa Dembele. I'm actually at a loss to understand why people are suddenly calling for his head. Moussa is one of our best players. How short are peoples memories that they forget that he was MOTM last week and was frankly magnificent. Just because he doesn't litter the stat columns with goals and assists doesn't mean he is a poor or limited player. His contribution to the team is far more wide ranging than this and he is also one of the only players to have started and played the full 90 mins in Russia and then again yesterday. Fans should have some respect for a player that we simply could not do without last season.

There is no doubt that AVB got it wrong yesterday but I defy anyone to suddenly start suggesting that we must be shit because we got beaten 3-0 by West Ham. Absolute garbage. We will bounce back, we will be better in our next game and we have far too good a squad to not be challenging for top 4 honours this season. As I have said MANY, MANY times on this site down the years......let's all have a little perspective shall we?

everyone will have a little moment. its called being a fan, everyone knows just how good we are and what we should be looking to achieve with this manager and squad.

That said, a 3-0 loss at home is about as good a time as any to open up some debate about where we could do better, winning is nice and the best indicator of everything - but it can hide a number of sins - one being my big bugbear about our lack of intensity/slow slow football and consequent lack of goals.

6 goals in 7 is a worthy discussion point and concern in my opinion.

Totally agree and I don't ever discourage debate but debate is not what I'm seeing. What I'm seeing, not just on here but all over twitter, is people calling for AVB to be sacked and this player and that player are garbage and should be dropped. That Adebayor is now our saviour and that we cannot win without Ekotto or Danny Rose at LB!?

It's madness. We are far from perfect and slow football is a problem but it's SO early in the season that I simply cannot understand the kinds of things that are being said. Sweeping statements that aren't worth of a season that is 7 games old.

I'm concerned about our goal scoring but only in the league. We smashed 4 past Villa in the cup and have been fairly free scoring in europe. The prem is a TOUGH competition and it will take TIME for our squad to settle into it's proper rhythm.

AVB will figure it out. I'm convinced of that much.

I think it's a fairly natural response to such a pathetic result really. I'd be worried if there was a lack of knee jerking and histrionics after the manner of that defeat yesterday.

It's hardly the end of the season, and we still have one of the best squads in the country, but it's an emotional sport so it's hardly surprising that being thrashed at home by that shower of shit and a manager who's a cross between sadsack and a Gamorrean guard is going to invite some over the top reactions.

As for Dembele, he's obviously not a poor player, but he does seem to be worryingly inconsistent. As soon as he comes up against a vaguely physical CM his game goes to pot.

Horses for courses.

Not the game for Dembeles ball carrying from the centre of the park.

Most teams go through bad patches and/or results like this. The key will be to see how AVB and the players respond.

As Big Sam rightly said, we got our arses kicked. Not sure what the team was expecting but from what i saw there was no intensity in the play, this being a London derby after all. IMO it was just one of the games that everything that could go wrong, did. No one in a white shirt would have got more than a 5 for me. Every WH fan i spoke to before the game was expecting them to get smashed 4, 5-0. So for them to win, so convincingly too, was also a surprise to them.

There is probably nothing to pinpoint exactly where we went wrong and sometimes fans can be guilty of over complicating things, talking about systems etc, bottom line is though you needs goals to win a game and yesterday we didn't get any. They took their chances, we struggled to create any. They had a plan, and it looks like we didn't.

Dont get me wrong people, I'm not even remotely happy about yesterday. I had the same sick feeling that we all get after a loss of that nature, but the reality is that it's far too early to be overly concerned.

There is NO WAY that West Ham are better than us, let alone 3-0 better in our own backyard. Yesterday was a freak result that we contributed to in a massive way by being off the pace, lacking in ideas and just generally out fought but the last thing we need to be thinking is that we've become slow, dumb and weak overnight.

It was a bad day that we need to move on from sharpish and focus on what we will do to put things right against Villa.

I think we're as fans all entitled a day or 2 of knee jerking, rage, depression followed by a visit to a strip club before getting back on form

I don't look at twitter but I actually didn't think it was too bad on here considering the result. Granted I've not seen the match thread. I've not seen any AVB out etc, just discussions and opinions. With no game due to the damn international that's all we've got to feed our spurs addictions for a while.
I actually thought there was a lot of positives ie lets learn from this result re complacency, get sandro & soldado back in the team & let's look forward to a response against villa.

Usually I'm the one posting this kind of thread, and I'm certainly not in panic mode after one defeat. However this one has left me feeling disappointed, yesterday I felt like I'd been smacked in the face with a spade. My main issues were...

This is one of the worst West Ham teams in years who up until yesterday couldn't buy a goal.
This was only their second away win in 2013.
This was their first win at WHL in 14 years.
It highlighted some glaring weaknesses in both our squad and style of play.
It highlighted (in my opinion) that we have a well respected manager who is still very young and learning his trade and far from the finished article.
And it was a chance to keep up with the established big teams who all, bar Arsenal, won. It could ultimately prove to be a costly loss in what looks like being a very tight season for a number of clubs.

Great post OP. What's more disappointing than the result is everyone's ridiculous over reactions on here.

May I offer one small positive, despite the humiliating loss yesterday one quick look at the league table tells me that we are already over quarter of a way to a points total that is classified as 'relegation safety'. After the 90's its still the first target I look for at the beginning of the season ;)

I think people are getting tense because haven't seen the best from many of our signings yet. Lamela has looked way off the pace (albeit having had limited opportunities), Soldado doesn't seem to be getting the chances we'd hope he'd get, Chadli hasn't shone (although he's not been bad) and Eriksen was completely bossed yesterday to a very worrying extent.

I think with the amount of money we spent and the expectations off the back of that, it's not surprising that people are getting a little jittery following what was one of the worst (if not the worst) performance we've seen under AVB.

But this was always going to be a risk with having so many new players coming into the team at the same time. We need to have a degree of patience and not get caught up in the hype so much when we do well or the depression when we have a bad result.

We're going to have a lot of this over the course of the season and whilst I think people are justified in having a bit of a wail after a performance as astoundingly crap as yesterday's, we need to temper that with a bit of long term thinking.

I thought West Ham got their tactics ok and executed them very well, but were very lucky to get a 2 goal lead. I'm pretty sure they only got the second and third because we were pushing forward and became disorganised. It was difficult to watch but it could have easily gone our way on another day, we'll just have to take it on the chin and hope it was a one off.
