With Eriksen and Lamele tracking back, its like playing with 9 men with these two on in present form

Davies has done nothing in any of the games I've seen of his this season to warrant a starting place, I don't get it either. I assume people are still living in the days of Rose's performances of last season.

Gotta be 4-4-triffic at the moment. Get the play out wide and get crosses into the box. Play fast, get the points. Put the pressure on the opposition instead of ourselves.

Sod it, Lennon on the right, Townsend on the left.

We need at least one out and out winger. I would give Townsend a run on the left wing. I liked seeing Towsend get past the fullback on Thrusday and getting a couple of good balls into the box. He needs to do a lot more of that and more often. I would go with a 4-3-3 formation with one defensive midfielder similar to the below based on current form;

Naughton----Fazio----Vertonghen----Rose
Stambouli
Mason-------Chadli
Lamela-------------------------------Townsend
Kane

You know, I've got to be honest, no matter what formation we've played this season, with whichever players, it always ends up looking as ragged as anything and the shape just disappears.

I just think we don't have players with the brains to adapt to formations and shape.

If we were going to play 4-4-2 we could put Townsend on the left, Eriksen on the right, Kane and Adebayor up front and just play to get in tons and tons of crosses. I'm not saying we should, but I guess you never know....

3-5-2 or 3-6-1, FTW! Shame our centre backs aren't strong enough for it.

Lloris
-Dier-Fazio-Verts-
-Walker--------------------Rose-
-Stambouli-Mason-
-Eriksen------Lamela-
Kane
I think this would allow us to press high up the pitch in the way Poch likes to, and it's a pretty fluid formation. Eriksen and/or Lamela can drop into the midfield whilst the other can support the striker. On the attack the width will come from the wing backs. The 3 centre backs will spread a bit to cover the wing backs and Stambouli will hang back as an outlet and become a 4th defender if the other team counter, whilst Mason helps to try and keep the ball ticking. It really owes a lot to the wing backs. Rose has been in good form this season and I think Walker's energy and determination would suit this.

Depending on the opposition and how much space we'll be afforded in the midfield we could take one of the attacking mids off for another striker, but players like Lamela and Chadli could probably play just off the striker in some sort of forward capacity.

Players are, of course, interchangeable based on form. So Chadli and/or Townsend can come in for Eriksen and/or Lamela, likewise with Dembele and Capoue for the Mason and Stambouli, or even Soldado and Adebayor for Kane.

However, the weak spot there for me really is the centre backs. You need them to be defensively disciplined and have a good level of understanding. Cohesion is important, and we don't currently have that.

As Paddy Power says-I hear you, Eddie!

Europe away and Chelsea, Arsenal away maybe 4-5-1 is OK.

Lloris
Back 3 TBA, Davies a challenger for Rose based on Thursday
Townsend Mason Bentaleb Chadli
Ade Harry

Are you Tim Sherwood? :p

Swap Wlaker and Rose, for Lennon and Townsend and I'd be interested....

Maybe let Chiriches play sweeper instead of Dier as well

I don't think Lennon and Townsend would work as wing backs, albeit Lennon is known for his ability to track back. It's more a position for full backs that are extremely attacking, rather than wingers. Their job is to support both attack and defence and have very high energy levels in order to do so. Walker and Rose are more suited to being full backs than wing backs, but given the right training and instruction they'd do a decent job. I think Walker would embrace it better than Rose purely based on energy and determination.

People often mistake it for being a 5 man defence, and thus a defensive formation, because you're using wing backs, but if anything it's a very attacking formation that presses high up and uses more men in attack that any formation with a back 4. The flipside is that you're exposed to counters as you're pressing high up so, as I said in my original post, you need 3 solid centre backs, a good sweeper keeper and maybe even a centre/defensive mid who has the discipline to get back and help out quickly. We've definitely got a top class sweeper keeper, and perhaps Stambouli can be the energetic centre mid (hence why I put him over Capoue), but our centre backs are lacking right now.

I don't really preoccupy myself too much with many formations. I only have two passions within this subject. I hate that 4-5-shit and would rather watch synchronized swimming than that "oooh all the sexy transitions"-shit. The other of my passions is that I believe the team is perfect for 4-3-3 and would love to see it for a sting of matches. One more CM will make us less prone to be overrun in the midfield. So many football hipsters argue that 4-4-2 will leave the midfield too open, but golly that happens all the time in 4-5-shit. We do also have loads of CM's, and should utilize more of them more often.
