The Brazilian club Corinthians are keeping their striker Adriano "detained" inside the team's hotel in an effort to force him to lose weight.

The club said Adriano, who has been fined several times for missing training, would be put on a strict diet inside the hotel at the team's headquarters, eating only what doctors give him and training three times a day.

The Corinthians fitness trainer Fabio Mahseredjian said the team chose to detain the former Internazionale striker because he has failed to improve his physical condition. He has played rarely since recovering from surgery on his Achilles tendon last year and is in danger of not being included in the squad for the Copa Libertadores.

Mahseredjian said: "In the hotel we have more control over him… He knows we're trying to do the best for him. All of us are dedicated, but it depends on him. Weight loss comes only through diet: you cannot lose weight through physical activity alone."

What is it with these once great Brzilians piling on the lbs?? I remember watching Adriano at Parma and Inter thinking he had everything i his locker to be a world class CF. Pace, Power, dynamite left foot. Such a shame, you have one career, eat what you want when you retire.

Maybe food is more important to him?

People should be free to pursue their dreams.

Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, now Adriano..............all had weight issues, particularly upon returning to Brazil. What food over there that is so nice the players lose their self control?

It's a stupid idea. Crash dieting might work in the short term, but as soon as he gets out of the hotel, he's just going to stuff himself.

Clearly he's not cut out for the lifestyle mentally.

To be fair it happens in the UK and elsewhere too, i'm trying to think of some obvious ones off the top of my head, players like Gazza & Mabbutt spring quickly to mind but i'm sure there are loads of others.

I guess part of it is due to the food, which is pretty damn good in Brazil.

The Rodizio (all you can eat style restaurant) is incredibly popular in Brazil, at a guesstimate in Sampa i'd say that at least half of all restaurants follow this style.

Also you have to remember that these guys are literally worshiped by fans in Brazil, think David Beckham style status - the three names above are all single and it makes no difference to them getting the ladies (or lady boys in some cases ) whether they are fat or in good shape.

Whereas in the UK, no self respecting WAG would be seen dead with a fat ageing footballer (well apart from Danielle Lloyd )

I guess one final point is that nightlife in Brazil works totally different to here in the UK.

For example if the spurs boys go out for a piss up one night, they probably head out at about 9ish, leaving the club at about 2-3am.

In Brazil the clubs don't open till at least 11pm. So these guys would head out sometime after 12am and get back anytime from 5am-7am - this is very standard. So i would imagine turning up for training which starts at 9am when you only left the club 2 hours before is pretty unlikely - hence the lack of fitness.

Most of the clubs in Brazil tolerate this with players of their reputation and fame as they are very talented players who if fit can be excellent for them. They also help a lot in growing their fan bases and associated marketing and shirt/ticket sales.

He's completely insane to be honest, but unlike say Gazza, he has a good level of support around him, so he's managing to just about hold it together.

As soon as the football stops and the money stops rolling in he'll get himself into some serious shit, especially when he has neither the fame nor money to bribe the police into getting him our of said shit.
