A Warning regarding Ratings

I don't think it's just a case of it being "easier to hit a button" although that sometimes comes into it. But it has practical advantages beyond that. Imagine 20 members wish to register their agreement with a post but have nothing further to add to it. The rating system is a much tidier way of allowing them to do this than each of those members leaving a post in the thread to confirm they agree.
Why not offer why you agree though, or disagree? Isn't that what a forum like this is all about?

Like I said, click of a button.

I get where you're coming from. I think especially with disagrees it can be a little perplexing if people don't offer a reason for the rating.

But I still feel there are certain cases where a simple agree rating is sufficient. When all you wish to say is yes, I agree with that, that is my view also. Or I support this position. This kind of response is perfectly justifiable in everyday discussion - one is not expected to provide reasons for agreeing with a point of view in every instance.

There is also the issue that most people probably don't have time to offer reasons on every post they agree or disagree with. And the forum would seem much 'quieter' if users were unable to leave ratings on posts they don't have time to directly reply to.

As I say, disagrees are a bit different and spams seem to be especially abused by a small minority. But overall it feels to me that most users get the balance right and the forum would be a poorer place without the ratings system.

I use a mobile phone. I've never gone back and checked my ratings given, but after your post, I thought I'd check all in order.

I haven't really got involved with the old 'negative ratings', maybe the odd dislike, but nothing more.

So I was very surprised to see that I'd actually awarded 4 spam ratings, for what appeared to me, to be perfectly reasonable posts

As you say, most probably as I've scrolled down by mistake.

Anyways, since removed, and I think I too will be checking once in a while from hereon in.

That's 4 spam ratings given by accident in 3 years. ;)
I've just checked my ratings given historically and although I was confident that I hadn't given any spam ratings, it showed that I had given 3 in the last 4 years. In all honesty in like Cider Spurs I was also surprised, they were given unintentionally as they were accidental - fat fingers on the mobile phone. I apologise to the authors of the posts who wrongly received them.

I think the 'slam in the Spam' rating is a without reason put down.

A lot of the time the post which gets a spam rating is factual and relevant to the theme being discussed.

Getting a spam rating in this way is like having someone knocking on your door and running way - not being able to make a sensible comment in any sensible way. The spam rating actually becoming a spam itself.

I think this is fair and is quite probably near enough how most who post throughout the site and not only the transfer section, feel about the ratings etc. (barring when the red mists descend!)

As I said to another a poster, this will most likely sort itself out now anyway.

Not given many spam ratings, and there was only 1 undeserved one (in all fairness it might not have been, but I cannot be fucked working out whether a post from 2016 was in context or not). The only other spams I seem to have given is for that nutter @TURKISH69 and people guessing answers to cryptics that @Archibald&Crooks had said are wrong, and slagging off ITKs.

Is it bad that I have a massive urge to give everyone in the thread a spam rating just for shits and giggles? I fully expect to get a load myself now though

Edit: just remembered my tag is even a disclaimer for Rob putting the neg reps on the right in case of fat thumbs when scrolling on mobile :ROFLMAO:

Exactly this. I tried to give them a taste of their own medicine, but it just gives the staff problems, so I stopped at their behest. It was stupid and childish, I absolutely don't deny it. But I was angry. I've had enough of reading interesting, funny, informative posts and at the bottom it's the same old culprits labelling it Spam. Why? What sin has been committed? The post strayed outside of the topic. Disaster! Someone mentioned something that didn't relate to the transfer of Giovani Lo Celso! Oh, won't someone, please, think of the children!

As I said elsewhere, it's like you're having a conversation in a pub with some mates - the discussion ranges back and forth, you get some jokes and some tongue-in-cheek banter, and at the next table there's a couple of blokes just going 'crap', 'crap', 'rubbish', 'irrelevant'. They're not engaging in the conversation, just passing judgement.
I have to confess I went on one similar childish “revenge run”. As you, I soon felt bad about it and regret my actions. The ones you describe so perfectly, don’t feel or “get it” in the same way. Sadly.

That said: I’ve given 3,548 positive ratings in here, and 84 neutral ones. After my spam-revenge-binge I had given a total of 34 negative ratings. That is less than one negative per one hundred positive ones.

After this thread was started, I removed a chunk of those negative ones (because they in all honesty were childish and petty). I’m now down to 11 negative ratings given in total.

Some of the guys in this thread defending the spammers give out more negative ratings per day. But most of them never post anything themselves.

To me: these are the people who should take a good look in the mirrors, not those of us who get fed up with them.

One should be allowed to have an opinion without having to justify themselves . In some posts it is clear that the individual lacks intelligence and would not be able to engage in a normal discussion!

Well when you put it like that ...

Not long now until it'll be a Britain's Got Talent style 3 'X's and that's a no from me.

There’s nothing wrong at all with the rating systems, it’s just the petty people behind the screens:sneaky:

or as some people claim, fat fingers, which can happen if you are posting on a smart phone

if the rating are causing problems, then its a simple enough fix, although we do seem to have a few precious members who are easily offended by negative ratings which I've never really understood.

Good OP. That's going to put a brake on some of the brainless shit stirrers on here. And you know who you are.
