Is Odobert not a possible first team improvement? I think he is. I think you are too pessimistic.
He has played 1 game so far and I would argue over half of the forum had never heard of him before we were linked. Lets not expect too much of him too soon. He may become a top player for us but its way too earlier to call him an improvement on our first team.

I read this on X, more colour to what I am thinking:

My frustrations at our window are justified I think

- We finished 5th
- 23pts behind Arsenal
- Lost 6 of our last 11 games
- Conceded 61 goals which is more than Everton and Crystal Palace did
- Just snuck in at 5th ahead of a rejuvenated Chelsea
- Got hammered, not beaten, hammered by Brighton and Newcastle
- Out the Carabao Cup in the 2nd round (August)
- Out the FA Cup in the 4th round

Yet the board and the scouting team looked at all this and thought signing just one 1st team improvement could resolve all those issues and we will make top 4 again this season

Unlike the other big 6, we didn't even have European football to juggle with in our schedule and thats after going out the Cups really early too! We had a really easy schedule last season and still couldnt cope

And we're all meant to believe just Solanke being brought in as the one 1st team improvement is enough work done?
There is an obvious recency bias in quoting our finish to the season - we got the number of points we got, and our late season form was largely the result of players being injured and then coming back not in the same form. What our second team losing on pens last August or us losing to Man City in the fa cup has to do with our league chances this year I really don’t know. Chelsea are a basket case. Yes we lost heavily a couple of times - so what?

Our squad is improved - Dragusin barely played and is a huge upgrade in defensive cover, solanke is obviously a better 9 in our system (and means we have more options to make up for Richy being injury prone) and the kids are clearly bought to improve the squad now not just the future. Ange has had a full year to implement his ideas too. You assume all our rivals have improved, but I don’t think that is the case. United still look shit, Chelsea are a mess, Villa lost some key players.

I think our first XI is better, our squad is deeper and with better injury luck I see no reason to expect us to get worse. I think we will get 4th, but really can’t see 8th at all

Bit late to this but my boldest and almost certainly most unpopular prediction/opinion is that Dragusin will overtake Romero and start next to VDV by the end of the season.

I also think Bergvall will start over Sarr sooner rather than later. Just think he has more to offer on the ball and Ange will prefer that long term.

That's only two predictions but I'm sticking with them for now.

Now the window is closed I'll make some predictions for what I think.

I think we are going to have a good season. IMO the squad is much stronger, fresher, younger than last season. If we can stay relatively injury-free (not a good start on the striker front) then I can see us doing quite well. I think our finishing in front of goal will improve and the team have a strong basis from last season on which to base Ange's philosophy, so I expect us to improve as the season goes on. I also think we will have a much stronger finish to the season.

I would like to think we have enough to secure a top 4 place this season and I'd like to think we can really have a go at the cups and Europa.

I also think we will see some new stars emerge into the first team this season. Most obvious is going to be Moore and Lankshear.

Nothing particularly ground-breaking there, but its where I think we are right now.

5th in league again
FA Cup QF's
League Cup QF's
Europa League Rd 16

Improvements as well as frustrations and clear areas of the squad which will be shown up as needing improvement in January and next summer to push on another level.

Overall will hopefully be an enjoyable season with some good attacking football, some up and down results and some progress.

I pretty much went the same 5th/6th and QFs of some cups.
I think the squad is still a bit short on quality and cover for anything else.

Reasonable expectations all around.

I do think we may well go deeper in a cup than I expected at the expense of another cup assuming we do continue to gel as a squad and show improvements. I think we could go out in the League Cup pretty early again, for example, and in turn grow during the season and make a SF in the FA or Europa
