    Player Watch: Tanguy Ndombele

To be fair to pretty much every current player, Hoddle’s ability to be ‘available’ was slightly enhanced by his ability to receive the ball on either foot, at any pace, from any direction and have it under instant control. He didn’t really need to run much to be ‘available’, he just needed to be...

    Manager watch: Jose Mourinho

TBH, we haven’t had a ‘style’ since Redknapp’s old-fashioned 4-4-2. We’ve been a team of individuals, and an odd bunch of individuals at that. Back then we had Crouch and Lennon in the same side. We had VDV wandering around the park smoking a fag and drinking a pint before making a quality...

That was how Terry Venables set up his back three, with a DM who could drop in to the CB role.

Then fucked off to Dubai for a piss up with some shady characters. Raises the age old question- correlation or causation?

I agree with this, I know it’s early days, but I expected more of a new shape and style to be apparent by now. Not panicking yet, mind, and at least we’re getting some results.

You are confusing quality with quantity. Boxing has a very specific demographic. Advertisers know exactly who their messages will reach. And exactly what mood their audience will be in. Very valuable.

Miss out on Europe altogether and we might actually win something next season.

    Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United

I don’t watch Villa, and haven’t seen much of Grealish, but I think if he was anywhere near Gazza’s quality, I’d have heard about it.

I understand that, but think of the future. If we can’t retire names, then in 3020 you’ll have people logging in as tiger342567854336889665. And we still won’t have won anything.

    Player watch: Christian Eriksen

There’s still no one out there to match his technique and vision. I’d worry about pace, workrate and physique, but training methods have moved on, so maybe he’d have bridged that gap anyway. Dele seems to cope, with nowhere near Hodd’s skills.

He could have used either foot, too. Blindfolded.

I'd have given you 30/1 on Dele from there, free money. I've bought total goals at 3.1 for £50/goal, and Son's total goal minutes at 28 for £7/goal. Haven't bet on the spreads for ages, I'll probably remember why in a couple of hours.

    Manager watch: Jose Mourinho

I think the point is that we can’t afford another 4 years of this before he becomes a competent defender. I like him, but he needs to learn quicker, or go on loan to a team that can afford to have defenders that regularly give goals/pens/red cards away. Coz there’s loads of them around...

How do you know it didn't cause friction? That was a dead rubber. And against a strong team, so not a great chance for extending his scoring record. Norwich, though? That's hat trick territory for Harry.
