From a central midfield point of view there was nobody else to call on. Moura came on because of his pace it really is as simple as that.
Honestly I’m surprised he didn’t substitute Son for Davies. He’s done it in the past and it’s been effective. As it was, Lucas was caught out defensively and we were punished for it.

Yeah that likely would have been a good move, but I can see why he made the changes he did.

I agree, he has gone on record to say our squad is too big and is a problem.

This is how it can manifest.
So now our squad is too big???
So we've gone from a perfect window, competition for places, quality in depth, to too big a squad?
Fuck me, just

To have major success this season, he is going to have to play his best players only in league matches until the knockout rounds of the Europa in March. This is especially important given the injury histories of Kane/Bale/Son/Ndombele/Lo Celso/Lamela. The second XI have enough to win all six group stage matches in Europa and beat Stoke in the Cup quarterfinals.

If he's playing Kane, Son and others in non-league matches in the next three months, the chance to push for a top 4 spot will be compromised. Being in the Champions League forces you to play your best players midweek, but Mourinho doesn't have to do that to reach qualification for the knockout stages. This also allows you not to pull players like Son after 70 minutes in league matches, since they won't play more than once a week for the most part outside of the holiday period.

He really needs to sort out the game management in the team, back to back home games we've thrown away due to failure to kill the game off / giving away needless free kicks which have led to goals in both games

Made some misjudgements on the substitutes. I said it in the match thread that it was rare to see a game with Mourinho as coach and loose 3-0 lead.

He probably thought that it wasn't even possible, but I guess with players like Aurier, Sanchez and Sissoko in the team any disaster is thinkable.

The unstoppable force of Jose Trophy Mourinho meets the immovable object known as Spurs

Objective truth is that with the VVD news especially we're 1% away from a title challenge. I hope he can get us there but it's frustrating to see the same fuckups so consistently.
I don’t think that it’s possible to just say that we’re 1% away from a title change. There’s no mathematical statistic that can back up that we are so close to challenging for the title. It’s still very early days and I think that anyone who believes that we are ready to challenge for it is setting themselves up for disappointment.

The reason he made the subs was the freshen it up. We didn’t really look in the game and had we grabbed a 4th, and we had chances, he’d be praised for his substitutions and exciting attacking intent. The result is a tough one to take but it was more mentality than tactics in my opinion. And that’s a problem that is bigger than just this one game. Great squad, much work to do.
Its been a fantastic window, but I cant help feeling we'll come up short again with our CBs.

There's only so much a manager can do do. We remind me of Liverpool pre VVD, in the end Klopp admitted defeat and broke the bank on the worlds most expensive defender. That one piece of the puzzle that transformed them from a shaky team who always looked like conceding, to European then PL champions.

It is undoubtedly too big in certain areas. We have lots of ok players in central defence, centre mid and wide forward rather than a few great ones

The free kick against Aurier was a joke. As was the free kick against Hojbjerg in the Newcastle game. But teams know we cannot defend set pieces under any kind of pressure. Jose needs the whole team defending set pieces all week, every week until they stop being so pathetic.

Also, surprised we didn’t see Doherty for Aurier and Davies for Reguilón (instead of the Moura and Winks changes). Both would have made us more solid and better suited to defend set pieces. Son and Ndombele were both playing well and could have had a nice rest on Thursday.

There's a massive irony here.

We can't defend set pieces, but we're brilliant on the counter attack.

So set pieces against us are going to result in a goal; it's just that no one knows which team is going to score

Jose obviously thought we could kill them on the counter and so decided to keep the pressure on.

Both Kane and Bale had chances to win the game, so it wasn't a huge mistake by the gaffer tbh.

Son off was an odd one. He was causing them all sorts of problems and didn’t look tired. I also think the protection Aurier and Reguilón lost ultimately made a big difference, especially on the right. Something like Doherty for Ndombele, with us going 442 and him/ Aurier playing one in front of the other and Bale likewise on the other side in front of Sergio would’ve nullified the only thing West Ham had
I can't see why people are criticising the subs. At 3-0 those players that come on are more than experienced enough, and of sufficient quality to see out the last 20 minutes. Our players need to rest when we can afford it, and yesterday was definitely a point where that should have been possible.

Bale is slightly different because he needs match minutes, but Winks and Lucas were starters for us until a few weeks ago. Playing in exactly the same roles they came into yesterday.

We can part sone of the blame to Jose as far as the mentality is concerned, but as far as the subs? I'm not sure I'd have done too much differently. Considering the stage of the game and what the score line was.

A lot of people bemoaning the subs and tactics with their hindsight goggles on imo.

You have to wonder why we've just bought a mountain of a CB who is renowned for his heading ability in the box. Perhaps Jose see's the issue as well?

Honestly, 3-0 with 10 mins to go - he’s probably been under pressure to play Bale (maybe even against his better judgement), tries to bring on legs and bar an own goal and a freak goal, I’d say 99 times out of 100, a 3 goal lead is good enough - he’s gotta trust his players.

move on, we didn’t lose.

Forget working on that attack, training should be fully focused on defending & not giving away sloppy free kicks !!!
That's the problem with Aurier and Sissokko for me. They have strengths but they are so clumsy in the tackle. Fortunately we bought players in so we don't see them quite so much this season.
