Monumental man management failure if Dele leaves the club. Mourinho just seems to always need someone to blame and this would be a huge mistake in my opinion. Dele is still young and has massive potential.
Potential for what? He has really ever only excelled at doing one singular thing on the pitch, and has otherwise never documented this supposed potential. When he does routinely nail that thing he does do you have to have him on the pitch. When he doesn't, he is the most expendable in the squad. Dele needs to score goals, or there is no point in not selling him for big cash.

I think it’s madness to sell him. He’s only 24 and has a rare gift to unlock defences and score goals. The things you said he excelled at are the most important and valuable things a player can contribute.

The club obviously need to raise money and he’s been set up as the problem. Yes he’s been off form but you don’t throw away all that potential.

If anyone should be surplus to requirements I’d sell Moura before Alli.

Just to add something here, that I don’t intend to use to exonerate Jose, but more just to provide some extra context. But during the off season before this event and into the season Jose’s father was suffering terribly from pretty severe illness which he two years later died from. Chelsea’s whole pre-season was all over the place and Jose was a mess.

I still don’t think it justifies any of what he did. It wasn’t ok. But helpful to remember, as we’ve seen with All or Nothing, that often there are very human things going on in the background too.
That’s fair enough. That must have been a tough thing for him to manage. Like I said, I’m sure he would admit in private that he made a mistake with carneiro.

Mourinho definitely polarises people. There are some, like shadydan, who seem to think that any criticism of Mourinho ipso facto implies an agenda against him. And there are those that will never like him because of things he did before he even became our manager. Every little thing he does becomes political. It’s most unhealthy.

He’s almost as polarising as Levy.

People who throw around so called agenda’s are trying to win an argument by attempting to discredit the opposing point of view rather than win on the strength of their points.

I agree. It’s typically a bad faith argument. It assumes that their point of view is correct and that the other person is dishonest. Sometimes this is just a lack of self-awareness / humility.

I'm not sure if you're including yourself in this, I don't think you are but anybody who has decided that they'll never like him shouldn't bother coming to a debate. To debate things without being open to the possibility of changing an opinion is such a waste of time. That works both ways too if people will blindly defend him or anybody else and not be open to the possibility that people can be criticized and that doesn't mean you're against that person.

Not sure if it’s already been discussed, but Jenas’ criticism is interesting. Jenas has taken it quite personally, maybe he’s close to Dele or just a fan, or sees a bit of himself in Dele?

But publicly stoking the fire, won’t help anyone.... unless he has an agenda (sorry Neville).

just gone back 3 pages and read the Jenas stuff. Bloody time difference!!

I don’t see that Jose is in the wrong for dropping Dele personally.

He stuck with him a lot last season and aside from early games the performances weren’t really good enough to justify setting team up to fit him in (and quite a number of posters in spurs forum match day threads were constantly slating him and calling for him to be dropped).

At the moment our team shape is more suited to him not playing as we’re going with Kane and two wingers up top.

It‘s up to Dele now to prove he can adapt or it not ultimately he may need to move on.

Of course we are not going to sell Dele now, Jose likes Dele. He wouldn't have been joking with him and been on his case in front of everyone otherwise a number of times. If he didn't like him he will just quitely push him out the door like Rose. But if Dele doesn't get his finger out of his arse this season, in the summer we will probably sell him. This season - last chance saloon for Dele.

It's no good having Dele around on auto pilot the next 5 years. If he want to stick around he's got all the opportunity to make that happen himself.

If Jose succeeds at us he could be our next Fergie because he’s already achieved all he wanted when he went to Italy and Spain. He said he wanted to win the league in all 3 countries including the U.K.. Now he has done that he has no reason to leave. His final ambition is to manage a national team before he retires at around 70. There are no other teams in the PL he would want to manage now, so maybe this could be the beginning of a dynasty with him? Anyway I hope so the guy oozes success. Opposition fans say he’s lost it, but I think that’s more they are hoping he’s lost it. If he hasn’t he could turn us into an absolute powerhouse.

The press seem to have an agenda against both us and Jose

The Sun reporting that José is upset we haven’t bought a striker ?

I‘m pissed off we’ve only signed virtually half a new team ?

Dele has talent but isn't showing it nearly enough and hasn't been consistent for a long time. We've all got opinions on who should stay and go - at the end of the day, Mourinho is seeing him often enough that he is in the best position to make the call.

For that to happen he needs to be fully backed by the club. Not just now, in one transfer window but every time. I'm not talking about spunking millions but some sensible acquisitions that will enable the team to progress and grow year after year. We already see certain people expecting, actually expecting us to win something this year or else. If we don't he's a failure, you can sense they are waiting for it.

But it doesn't work that way and it isn't that simple. Without spending money on a grand scale, to turn us into a winning club is the work of a few transfer windows IMO.

A repeat of the stagnation recently experienced would just make giving him the job pointless. There have been, over the past few years at least one or two occasions where the club have failed to recognise the moment and act on it.

So now the club needs to shit or get off the pot. Make the same mistakes and it is time for them to move on. No more excuses.

Good post. I agree.

I actually loved mourinho until the Carneiro incident. And his dour time at United. When I coached in my 20s I had unofficial biographies of him and studied his communication style. I loved him. I was an inter fan before I was a spurs fan and his CL victory in 2010 is still my favourite campaign in club football.

I don’t dislike him now. I think Levy made the wrong appointment. I think his star has faded a little and he isn’t the forward-looking appointment I would have liked. But I was disappointed when we didn’t get van gaal and brought in poch instead. So maybe I’ve learned that lesson too well?

As my tag line says - « wrong about everything » - I don’t mind admitting when I’m mistaken and I try to formulate my views so they are falsifiable. Even if the reality is we have so little insight into the details, we are never in a position to make confident assertions about the team we love so much !

I completely agree! Im not expecting us to win anything this year. This is mourinhos first full season with us. Last season doesn’t count as it was Pochs regressing team he inherited. You can see now he’s starting to put his stamp on the club and I’m happy for this to pan out for the next five years to see where we are.

Papers are running with that he’s in ‘disbelief’ at the club’s failure to so far buy a striker this summer, fairly understandable tbf considering the run of games we have coming up. While we’ve done some brilliant business this summer it is quite amazing we haven’t given him something he’s been asking for since January

Fairly sure we will sign a striker, although we are leaving it late as often is the case but overall not a bad window.
The only concern is the longer the week drags on the more desperate we become, and the issue then is what we end up with.
