Well, that's some good news from Herc. Assuming he is referring to this lad.

Methinks patience is key over the next eight days. I can see that if we make any more signings, there's a strong likelihood they won't happen until the final two days of the window. The shit or get off the pot moment of every TW.

Speaking of... what a crazy, wonky window this must be for all clubs. So much uncertainty with covid and how it will impact finances for everyone. That, and you have a window that has been open for quite some time, which is also a little bit unusual.

If we were to sign no one else, I'd still give this TW a firm B+. If we are able to get an experienced CB (upgrade) and a competent back-up striker in before Oct 6th, then it will easily be an A. If... if... there was some bonkers last minute deal for a game-changing attacking midfielder on deadline day... then that would make it an A+, and arguably the best TW we've had in the past 30 years... if not, ever.

a striker seems to be something Levy just cant get to grips with signing and I think that's probably because the last genuinely good purchase was Berbatov and that's 15+ years ago.

Ignoring two of what I personally think are club legends in Keane and Defoe, both of which are joint 8th in our highest ever league scorers, plus Crouch who is a legend in his own rights for getting us the goal that got us into the CL.

Hell, even Adebayor was a snip at £5m and score a decent amount for us.

It seems like, based on the arguments on here, Redknapp didn't even exist.

I can't be the only 1 who kinda wants us to sign another winger on deadline day and no striker and no Skriniar just to watch the world burn

I didn't include Keane or Defoe because both were originally signed before Berbatov and when we resigned them you know what your getting so they weren't risky signings.... trust me I loved them both.

Crouch I liked but again it wasn't really an unknown quantity. He had been at Liverpool etc before us we knew what we were getting.

Adebayor was a risk on temperament and we eventually had to force him out the door when all the malaria madness and voodoo mum stuff started so although it was small outlay the wages and effect on the squad weren't great.

The point is signing a striker is very hit and miss and if they don't score they lose value very quickly look at Jansen he was starting for Holland scored against England and scoring for fun overseas. We ended up selling for over a £10m loss and had to go sniffing around Mexico to find him a club.

The fact skriniar apparently wants to come
And inter are willing to sell puts all the cards in our hands, the time frame doesn’t matter as much as the striker as we still have decent depth in the position to get us through

I think Skriniar is way more important for the squad myself, I know it's important to get a striker as that's what the manager wants but we're in such a different position now to what we was in the winter. We had Kane injured before we even signed Bergwijn and we've now added Bale. So we've got two "forwards" added compared to where I problems began in the winter. The problems were exacerbated by Sons injury and then because Bergwijn was forced to play more than he should just arriving he got injured. My point is these problems are unlikely to happen because we have added additional to our forward power meaning less chance of fatigue injuries which made a striker in the winter so critical.

However no matter what the situation is fitness wise in defence fact is, we do not have anyone close to the quality of Skriniar.

Michael Bridge on sky saying he's confident we'll reach an agreement for Skriniar (and will sign a striker).
Always respected Michael Bridge, I have...

Just read more of the thread, for clarity the above was a joke, and I'm delighted if true...coys

The thing is I think there are lots of strikers on the market who can do a job giving Kane a breather.

But how many attainable proven quality defenders who can lead the back line are there to get?

I feel he should be our primary target now.
Hopefully it looks good.

Yeah 100% agree. The main problem we have with the backup striker isn't so much the quality, it's more that we just don't bloody have one. Even someone like Troy Deeney, as underwhelming as he might be, would still spare us from burning out Kane, give us someone to play as a target up top and save us from having to pretend Son, Alli or Lucas are strikers and allow us to play them where they naturally fit. Obviously a top quality backup would be ideal, but since Kane will play all the big games (when fit) half the battle is just having someone to fill that hole in the squad.

On the other hand a true top quality CB can change the entire way we function as a team. Look at the impact Van Dijk had on Liverpool. Origi may have scored a few important goals and be a useful squad player, but it's that presence, stability, leadership and consistency provided by VVD that has turned them from a decent side into one of the best teams the league has ever seen. Origi is pretty fucking average whenever I watch him but apparently he's a good enough backup for the current champions because without him they'd have to change their whole style of play and shift a winger up front.

Someone like Skriniar could be a genuine game changer, whereas a striker, though essential, is still ultimately a backup.
