We must be one of very few fanbases who wonder where the money comes from when we're touted to spend big on a player(s). I'm not gonna question it because one thing's for sure and that is Levy knows how money works and what we can or can't do in the market. And I'm definitely not complaining.
We're an intelligent bunch. Spending a billion on the team, only to see it implode through debt and ffp would be unedifying.

We're beginning to compete with the big boys financially, because we've done it the right way.

I'm so confused. How and why are we throwing around this kind of money?! I'm not complaining but just seems to be going against everything we were told about being frugal earlier in the window.
There's a few things to consider here:

- if you have loads of money to spend you don't broadcast this as it massively weakens your bargaining position

- with Skriniar and a striker and a few sales we'll probably end up with a net spend of around £90m, which is still a lot less than last year

- big Joe made his money from taking advantage of these types of situations, making investments during bad times means you can get very good value, if you look at the players we've signed so far it looks like we're paying about half the normal price

- as other teams fail to invest we get an even bigger return on our investments than we usually would, also the consequences of not investing now are more severe than ever

- all the years we moan about being Levy and the club being too concerned about money are so that we are well prepared for situations like this

The whole "Skriniar is slow" theory is hilarious.

Classic baseless internet rumour. One person on here said it, like they were all informed about it, (having probably never seen him play) and then it snowballed. He's not slow. Let's put that to bed once and for all.

I personally don't see Toby going the other way but equally I'm not sure we would want to pair Toby and Skriniar together. Sanchez feels like the one we need to be starting alongside either of them. I feel like Skriniar and Toby would have to rotate with each other. Or maybe we do let Toby go and we plan to work it like this:

1st Choice: Skriniar & Sanchez
2nd Choice: Dier & Tanganga

Skriniar and Dier are both quite aggressive CB's and have similar playing styles.
Sanchez and Tanganga are both very quick, strong and athletic. They would be complimentary pairs IMO.

Also from a squad balance perspective Dier and Tanganga can each cover another position from the bench (DM and RB)

I absolutely love the way SCers would structure deals to get them done.

They make it seem like it's no more difficult than swapping panini stickers.

Bang on.

As per your other recent post regarding our so called "surplus players" having to be willing to leave and to what clubs they would be willing to move to.

When we are moving for a player(s) our management not only need to think about encouraging those "surplus player(s)" on high salaries and on contracts to leave, they also have to factor in our promising youth players who will turn 21 over the next few years and will be demanding squad places e.g. Sess, Clarke, Skipp, Cirkin, Parrott, White etc.

On top of the complication of having only 17 non-homegrown players. (I think I read somewhere that the homegrown requirement is going to increase in the near future. Which will make it harder to manage the squad mix)

It sounds so easy!!

I cannot think of another industry where you have the complications mentioned above.

We are building one hell of a team if we get him
Exactly this, however, it's going to take some time coming together. Looking really positive though. All we need to see now is Jose plan come to fruition.... Whatever that may be ?

I woild really hope if he joins he replaces Dier at the back as he still doesn’t convince me as a top 4 CB (was done for Ings goal with a ball over the top - the latest lapse) but seems Jose has the horn for Dier due to his attitude so probably Toby has to reluctantly make space :-(

The ball over the top of that channel should be covered by the other defender as its easier to turn 90 degrees quickly than 180 unfortunately no matter how fast Sanchez is he's a space cadet.

If this comes off we will have almost bought an entirely new back line. Suspect it will take a bit of time to adapt

Good point. I look forward to when Tanganga will be ready to step up as first choice, because I rate him as a much better allround defender than Sanchez.

I think the reason we are spending serious money is because it's essential for our business. The squad needs investment to perform. It's well overdue. This isn't frivolous or glamour signings it's fixing the hole in the roof that is leaking into a bucket.

We need a dominant top class centre back. We concede stupid goals pretty much every game. Really basic stuff.

Same for Everon’s goal. Neither of our CBs even jumped, and instead let Calvert Lewin head home completely undisturbed.

no idea how to embed tweets, but just saw the athletic are saying, jose still wants THREE more signings after milik & skriniar. a playmaker, a DM and another CB.

now if ( and a massive if) that happens, we have undoubtedly had an injection of cash.

Yep, I honestly wouldn’t be worrying about the money side of things. It will all be in hand. We won’t be selling any big players and income will surely come from another source. The club has lots of other assets.

Ive always believed we’d spend money this window, be very active in the market (although surprised at no outs yet) and hopefully back the manager with the players he wants. To not do that with Mourinho beings the kind of attention a chairman doesn’t want. The only thing with this player that is a surprise, is that Mourinho said the targets would be pretty low cost and that him and levy understood the market. Maybe though Skriniar coming available was just too good an opportunity to turn down, just like the lads from Madrid.

So in 2013, we sold Elvis to sign the Beatles.

And this summer, if we sign Skriniar/Dias and a good striker, we’ve sold Jedward and signed Elvis and the Beatles?
