If only Poch had been given such backing...

He was given backing but if Poch wants one player per position and they aren't attainable we're stuck with no one. By all accounts Jose has given plenty of realistic targets and now we're able to complete deals

Don't think it was quite as simple as that unfortunately.

Every morning I see my Spanish friend, he tells me how good this guy is.

'Buenos Dias', he says.

'Yes, yes he is', I reply.

Getting a bit tiresome now, to be fair, so be glad to get him in just to shut my friend up.

no chance this happens. Benfica wouldn't allow him to leave for less than the clause and that is 100M EUR. even without UCL, Benfica has presidential elections the coming month, they have had defensive problems as of late, no way they are willing to negotiate their best defender.

I could see this kind of deal happening. I think it makes sense to spend big now, as it's so cheap to borrow money and the market is slightly deflated. So far prices haven't been as low as perhaps we'd expected, however, is the window draws to a close, more and more clubs will reluctantly have to accept lower fees, as they can't avoid the realities of the cost of lock down. The reality is, we will be ok in the long term, despite the financial set backs and I doubt we'll see another window with the opportunity for so much value, so I think Levy will be keen to revamp the squad now. I know Levy said the loan we took was just to tide us over and not for transfers, but I always felt that wasn't likely to be true.

These are the sorts of players we need to spend big money on. In the Lo Celso, Ndombele, Reguilon, Bergwijn mould.

Dias woukd be fantastic.

As I've mentioned in the Vinicius thread, Benfica seriously need to bring some funds in after their spend so far this summer.

However, Benfica & Sporting, even when faced with financial hardship, can be v3ey stubborn when selling prized assets.

Dias is probably their biggest asset right now and I don't think either Jesus or the president will want to sell. In fact Jesus may be furious with it as he came under promises that he'd have backing to compete in Europe not just the league.

Therefore I can't see it unless we offer 40m +.

Unless Jose compromises on a CF who is rather cheap.

Don't think it was quite as simple as that unfortunately.

Is it not simple because you want to say Poch wasn't backed like Jose is being?

When Poch wanted a DM from Southampton he got one

When Poch wanted a RB from a team promoted from the Championship he got one

When Poch wanted a young, promising attacking player from the Dutch league he got one

When Poch wanted a GK that was unwanted at a PL team he got one

These are all identical profiles to every player we have signed so far under Jose

Dias would be no different than bringing in Sanchez, and I'd argue that bringing Ndombele and Lo Celso in is more costly and manager backing than Bale and Reguilon.

Where we didn't sign anyone was when Poch wanted players that didn't want us and there was no alternative given. You can't force De Light and De Jong to join us just because Poch really wanted them, and that can't be seen as not backing the manager.

Currently, our CB list is Toby, Sanchez,Dier,Tanganga,Foyth, CCV.

We are getting lot of offers on Foyth - we might sell him permanent. Probably CCV too. Toby & Dier have signed a new deal-cant see them leaving anytime soon.

If either Dias or Kim Min Jae comes in, we still would have 5 CBs - which is a bit too much. It hinders progress of Tanganga.
If we bring in 5th CB, surely we have let one more go on loan or sold surely.... ?
