Well, whatever height he tells women at the pub aside it’s clear that size is going to make him an aerial liability. Something that Rose and Walker were always underrated in was winning a lot of aerial balls and helping out on crosses. Aarons undoubtedly has a lot of improvement ahead of him defensively - my question is if that crossing and dribbling is really legit, or sort of a function of playing in space for Norwich?

WHy do we have to have 'back ups' anymore? WHy can't we have competition for places, or decent options off the bench? Tactical options...Aarons is better going forward than Celik, for example. Celik better defensively. Castagne good at both.

Strength in depth for a top 6 team rather than sub-optimal squad players.
I like the idea of having attacking fullbacks in Sess and Aarons and defensive fullbacks in Davies and 1 other (Celik?)
Gives us good options on both sides. If there's not much to defend on one side you can go with the more offensive option and push them on. Also gives the option of wingbacks. If there's a quality wide attacker on one side on the other hand you can go with the more defensive option.
Aarons for me will offer more than Aurier going forward and be less error prone defending. So already we'll be improving. I miss the days of Walker/Trippier and Rose/Davies being able to rotate.

Lucas has given us all very recent insight into height not being integral to effectiveness in the air.

Danny Rose is short so why can't Aarons also be effective in the air with coaching?

Likewise Moura who has a hell of a spring on him. Even if he loses the ariel duels, as long as we pick up the second ball it's fine.

I've tried very hard to see what others obviously like about Max Aarons but whenever I've watched him for Norwich I've been unimpressed :meh:. Even excusing the defensive liabilities due to inexperience, he hasn't exactly shone in attacking role. You can't just blame that on the fact that he plays for Norwich because Cantwell has looked very good.

I could of course be wrong but my gut feeling is we should pass on this one.

When you compare him to the best full backs in the league he seems to lack the physical presence and domination in the position. He reminds me of KWP who didn't have the frame to make it for us. If Aurier could get the mental aspect right he could have been one of the best.

I thought we'd already been through this, Philip Lahm one of the best full-backs of all time 5ft 7 ins. Roberto Carlos the same.

I never thought of it like that but thats a great shout actually. Is Celik defensive? I don't know much about him but yea having an attacking and a more defensive option for both sides would be great for adapting tactically for each game.

I expect he is our #1 choice:
- young
- PL experience
- not too expensive
- probably prepared to move after relegation
- from a team probably prepared to sell
- * home grown *

All that assumes he is good enough.

He's what Danny Rose was when he first came on the scene. Stumpy but a lot of pace and aggression. Good going forward but suspect on the defensive things.

I'd rather Emerson from Barca or Dest from Ajax.

He's got pace to burn though, which KWP, for all his strengths, just hasn't.

Aarons only turned 20 this year, and played his first full season in the prem in a struggling team.

I think he'll go on to be a very good full back personally, and I'd love it if we signed him.

Every foreign player we buy requires us to sell a foreign player first otherwise we will have somebody in the first team squad that can't play.
