I've always like Mourinho, even when he was at Chelsea. I've always liked his arrogance and they way he rubs so many people up the wrong way. I've always thought Pep is a bit like Luke Skywalker, while Jose is Han Solo.

My favourite TV character, when I was a kid, was JR Ewing. I'd liked Johnie in Karate kid and hated Daniel Larusso. I wanted Chris Eubank to win, not Nigel Benn. Chael Sonnen shits on Anderson Silva. Maradona over Pele any day of the week.

Apart from Sonnen v Silva, which is patently untrue, that is very well said.

Well that's demonstrably false.

For the first fight, they didn't make the rules clear. Chael thought if you tapped, it ended the round, not the contest as a whole.

The second fight "victory" was clearly because of Anderson's illegal short grabbing and steroid abuse, something Chael would never do.

That first fight might’ve been my favourite ever finish. Between that and Jones on Machida.

Anyone who talks about themselves in the third person wants shooting.

Pablo would never do that.

In all seriousness (I know you're kidding), it's part of the PR for Zlatan. It's reasonably obvious, when looking in detail, that he's nearer to being quite a shy and humble guy who puts on a facade for business reasons. I'm convinced it's a strategy rather than purely an aspect of his personality, as it just doesn't fit otherwise.

I'd take him as I feel like that arrogance/belief is what we are missing. It's not the "disruptive to the team" type of thing either.

I'm don't doubt Mourinho is a great tactician, and I know he isn't going to give his secrets away, but that video wasn't particularly insightful IMO. Make sure Messi always has someone (not the same person) respoofor him, make sure someone tracks Alves if the left back is pulled inside by Messi, and hit the space behind their attacking full backs.

for me... this transfer window is gonna be nervey. i am seeing what Jose is doing, he is building the squad the way he does countless times, the kind of team that is able to win those big matches that counts.

goodbye attacking full-backs, i kinda expected Rose, KWP and Serge to leave, Davis is the only DLC we have and that's the kind we always see in his teams. i am wondering if he will convert Foyth or Tanganga to RB, making him a DRC. But that's his full-back preference, yes they do go forward, but their main job is to defend.

my main issue and i don't think it has really come out as of yet is that I don't really see a place for Alli in our team. he tends to be more of an attacking midfielder, playing behind Kane, but it seems we are looking at a 4-3-3 Alli doesn't fix in a 4-3-3. so i wonder if Jose will convert him to either a more defensive role, deep-lying playmaker role, or a wide attacker.

fingers crossed that we get the players he needs.

i really think we will do more than top 4 this season, hopefully, some luck with draws for cup games, i think if we can get to the business end of any of the 3 tournaments this season, we might have something to remember 20/21 by.

i am pretty sure i am gonna get quite a few disagrees for this post. but... oh well... my opinion. lol!

Anywho....

COYS!

Good post but I disagree.

I can see Dele taking a position in the front two with Kane in a 4411. We saw at the end of the season the last 5 games we shifted to 2 upfront to give Kane more support but defensively we were playing 2 banks of 4. We conceded 0.6 per game compared to our seasons average of 1.23. JM looks to be looking for countering speed from our wingers so I can see Son shifting to LW with Lucas at RW and us end up with Kane and Dele in a similar style to the first Chelsea team but instead of Lampard behind Drogba, Kane would end up deeper as Dele would use his movement to get beyond Kane with the 2 wingers .
Defend as a 442. Attack as a 334 almost.

I don't think Dele works well in any other role

Football is a simple game most of the time. A lot of people seem to want to over complicate it nowadays.

And for me this is the difference between someone like Harry Redknapp and Jose Mourinho. Redknapp found the right blend of players and gave them confidence to be their best. It was not tactics free, but once the players crossed the white line the majority of the responsibility was theirs and he wanted the game to be as simple as possible for them (e.g. Palacios told to just win the ball and give it to Modric). He wanted Modric, Bale and VDV to do the business as his tactics gave them a platform to be their best. With Mourinho, he wants to control every player like a chess piece, and he wants victories to be because of a deliberate strategy to exploit an opponents' weakness rather than due to a piece of individual brilliance by a player. The Europa league final against Ajax was a classic example. Man U were favourites and at the time had better and more experienced players, but Mourinho set up his team to stop Ajax being effective, and to pounce when they made a mistake. Ajax, with 6 players 21 or under in their starting line up had 69% possession and 17 shots to Man U's 7, but Man U won 2-0. It is hard to fault such an effective outcome that won both a European trophy and qualified for the CL (and the £50-£100M that participation in that brought).

Easier said then done, Barca were unstoppable at the time and were sweeping everyone aside - if you watch the first leg of Inter Milan vs Barca when they beat them 3-1 at the San Siro it was one of the most tactically genius displays I've seen in the CL, really fascinating to watch.

Only the highlights here but it's still gives you a bit of an insight into how they dealt with Barca

I reckon VAR would have ruled out Inter's third as Milito was offside when Sneijder headed it back across goal, and that treble would never have happened.

I reckon it would be interesting to go back through history and see how many great games VAR would have ruined with narrow 'armpit' offside decisions.

Inter had an offside call against them in the first 10 mins, think it was Milito which was actually onside so swings and roundabouts :p

Interesting in UCL final of 2010, Jose didn't play Zanetti in left back ... rather he was played in midfield alongside Cambiasso

An off topic aside for a second as I’m killing time - maybe 7-8 years ago now my wife and I were in Stockholm, it was one of the international weekends... so we decide to go to the pub, The Spitfire, for a bite to eat. My wife is Swedish and loves her fish and chips, and it’s the only place in town with good fish and chips back then... so we are at our table, only people In the pub and in walks Mellberg, Daniel Andersson and Zlatan. I mean, you aren’t gonna miss these guys, Zlatan’s a giant, Mellberg looks like he could go 12 rounds with Tyson... I look up, smile but say nothing. That’s one thing about Sweden, you just sort let famous people be, don’t hound them. So, Zlatan come up and asks Marie ‘So, is the fish as good as he says,’ pointing at Mellberg... ‘The guy won’t stop going on about them since he moved to England...’ Marie says its great, and Zlatan says ‘Excellent. Mind if we join you rather than sit over there and get all noisy arguing about tomorrow’s match?’ So for an hour we have dinner with the three of them and they are genuinely lovely, funny guys. Afterwards we all go our separate ways, and we carry on shopping, maybe an hour hour and a half later we notice that people around us are all getting on their phones to call people and we overhear someone saying ‘You’ll never guess who we’ve just seen...?’ So we figure the guys are walking through town still when across the street we hear this booming voice yell ‘STEVE!’ And look up to see Zlatan standing on the corner waving like I’m some long lost friend. So, of course all of these people on their phones are trying to work out who they hell *we* are.

Won’t claim to know the guy remotely, but the hour chat over dinner was hilarious and he made my wife feel like a superstar.

I agree, it was a great tactical performance. Just didn't get a lot of insight from that video in particular. Will watch the one you linked.

Cheers - and yeah it was ever so slightly surreal, I mean it was the biggest star in the country just joining us for an hour for dinner, plus two more of the national team, the day before a qualification game. And they were all just lovely. I was just completely impressed with how they were, you know, none of this pretentious superstar stuff and so very different from the 3rd Person Zlatan persona. Definitely one of my favourite memories.
