Jose Mourinho on Ben Davies:

"What I love in him is that I always know how he’s going to perform. He’s so stable, so compact that I really like to have that feeling." #THFC

Whilst I understand what he’s getting at here, I think this quote sort of sums later-era Jose. He’s a fleece and slippers kind of guy these days, whereas in his pomp he was couture all the way.

Great backup, average starter. Should have a better LB than him.

Been a good servant at Spurs but like the bloke on our right, is no longer up to the grade. Limits our go forward, lacks a yard of pace and probably would not be someone you'd be looking to buy as a starter right now. Will remain at the club behind the scenes because he is well thought of.

Found his best position as an tucked in LB, means he doesn't have to constantly go on the overlap and can tuck in, suits him perfectly.

Similar to Azpilicueta. Davies is a limited LB but that suits us and him well when Aurier is pumping up the flank attacking. Plays well for Wales in a 3 back line too

Ben Davies is just a bloody bloke. He's like a proper, good old Denis Irwin type full back. Unspectacular, but does his job, and is completely reliable. Its the same reason why one of my favourite Spurs right backs remains Corluka. He's not going to overlap, or give you any great dynamism in attack... but you'll know he's always going to be there when you need him.

Did anyone else read that first sentence with their hands on their hips thrusting their pelvic region forward?

Unspectacular doesn't win you trophies.

TAA and Robertson do.

That said I do think Davies is a great bloke and he takes his criticism on the chin.

Yeah so my point about Henderson is he is unspectacular yet a key function in his team, why can't Davies be the same?
They're completely different roles. One of Davies' responsibilities as a functioning wing back is crossing and he doesn't excel in this area. He is also slow.

However, he is tenacious.

And a good bloke all round.

We can't go through a season with a lop-sided and predictable attack.

Oh so unspectacular players are only reserved for certain roles, gotcha. ?

Also Jose hasn't been playing him as a wing back, he's been playing him as a 3CB which suits him more.
