I wouldn’t worry about UCL being a factor in a players decision. We have been in the competition for the past 4 seasons and it hasn’t done us much good. The only player that maybe swayed it was Ndombele.
Blatantly not true though as we have signed a number of talented players like Lo Celso, Bergwijn, Sessgnon who have discussed playing at the highest level as being a factor

Disagree. We were signing players of that standard when we were in the Europa. None of those were massive signings for a club that’s just lost a UCL Final. Lo Celso could grow into that, like Modric did.

The allure of playing at the highest level is only part of it. The extra prize money involved also goes towards the higher wages we will offer.

Interesting insight to the Werner deal on the BBC Sport site. Just goes to show the figures involved. Earlier in this thread his name has been mentioned but shite, it’s one hell of a commitment. Scousers probably didn’t want to risk it, so there you are.

We need to be very tactically cute (and also lucky) imo.

Or no-one knows what competitions in Europe we will play and when fans will be back in stadium. Also, looking for Bergwijn and Gedson seems like Mourinho camp is keeping close our transfer news.
If you think clubs aren’t working on transfer your well off the mark ! Plenty of business has already been done in Italy Germany and just look at Chelsea ! Things will be happening at clubs, not saying at us because who knows what we are up to levy prob won’t spend a penny again

Yeah. Werner, Bernardoni and that's all. The rest is using buy option from already made loan deals. We are probably working on transfers too.

Going by what Mourinho said yesterday we will bring players in but there will be no big ticket items.

Totally fine with that. With an attack as deep in quality as ours, and let’s face it that where the big bucks are spent really, a clever approach to DM and defence can see us make significant improvements. We really don’t need huge amounts of surgery.

In summer 2009, for the first team we merely added a target man who could play foil to an already talented attack, a playmaker who could rotate in with our existing midfield, and a centre back to take the pressure off King. Every other signing was with a view to the future (with Walker being the standout obviously).

DM of whatever description Mourinho fancies, RB and then anything else is a bonus.

I’d much rather we spent the majority of our budget on young talent for the future, and supplement with some smart frees.
Sounds like Meunier is off the table now, but I’d take Tiago Silva in a Naybet style role.
A DM (such as Hojbjerg) and a rb- hopefully Aarons
Then Eze. I think he’s the stand out talent in the championship
It’s also worth noting that whilst Troy Parrott might not have been deemed ready for this season, his development might mean he is ready for next season.

We don’t need Tiago in a Naybet role. Naybet was brought in to work alongside a youthful King. We already have an experienced CB in Toby. Whether people think Toby is good enough anymore is another question. With the right partner that compliments his abilities, I think he can still play a big part for us.

To be clear, I’m thinking that Tiago could be a short term replacement to cover Jans spot in the squad. He might not play every game, but would give us more depth. I wouldn’t even be mentioning him if it wasn’t for his contract situation.
As things stand for next season we have:
Toby
Sanchez
Dier
Tanganga
With Foyth out on loan/ injured.

Its not bad, but with any kind of injury we’re suddenly weak again. And, we’ve got literally no evidence of Davies being able to play Cb in a back 4 (before anyone suggests it).
CB isn’t a priority area, but if an opportunity arises then I’d look to take it.
*Edit- apologies just realised all of this should be in the transfer wish list thread. Don’t know if it’s possible to move it, but won’t be carrying it on in here.

If anything we should be more worried about the big players we might lose to balance the books rather than who we might bring in

Not going to happen. Levy has already said as much and in this environment no club can afford them anyway.
If talk of a £200m hit from Corona are true and the loss from not making the champions league will be the reasons he needs to accept bids. I don't think anyone could blame him either if it was to "save the club". One thing is for sure and that is that we will be shopping in the bargain bucket this window.

Right, i'm locking this now. When we come back the rules will be applied again so pretty much most of whatever it is you lot are jabbering on about needs to be in the player threads. (I know it's not ITK, there's not been any to speak of).

I've cleared this with A&C and Rob. I was told by someone that Jose has made enquiries about Thiago Silva and if he'd like to join us. That's as far as it could go, as we all know Levy may be reluctant to sign a 35 year old. But just thought I'd put it out there that Silva is under consideration.

Why not? As long as his wages aren't an albatross and he can still compete, it could be astute. He's a defensive leader who has seen it all and won a ton. We need more like that in the dressing room, training, and in games. I don't mind veteran players, here and there, if they can have an outsized impact on some of the younger players.

agree, he's still one of the best defenders in world football
joey barton famously said he looked like a ladyboy and it's hard not to un see that coz he really does, but he's worth a punt if the numbers add up
