There's so much discussion about Lamela, and so many completely different comments and opinions, because.....he's average. He tries hard which gets him many sympathisers.

Nah, you're objectively wrong. Actual average players very rarely get talked about all that much. I think you can do so much better in attempting to find a reason for the elevated volume of discussion about Erik Lamela and the many clashing opinions among Spurs fandom.

Also worth noting how incredibly one-footed he is. It makes him so easy to defend against at times and he doesn't have searing pace to compensate for such. Due to injury record I'd consider it efficient business in the current climate to sell for £15m if possible and bring Ryan Fraser in on a free who never gets injured and has very impressive output. Saying this I will always love Erik and part of me never wants him to leave
This one footed argument is very tired as well as discrediting Lamela unfairly. Unfair because I do not hear you (and others) going on about other one footed footballers for example Dele. The only reason you go on about it is because he is left footed. Whatever reservation you have against a player who has one dominant foot, should also apply to Dele.

I should point out that I believe that Lamela would be highly effective through the middle (as in the middle of the 3 right behind Kane in a 4-2-3-1). He's rarely been tried there because of Dele & Eriksen but I feel he'd prosper.

Put his intensity & vision more in the mix.

These are probably the closest we’ll get to seeing Lamela’s goal:

I will not stand for any Lamela slander....

Lamela is a tenacious pit bull. He only knows how to give 110% every time out. He just put his career on the line a few months back. Always made himself available to play when he wasnt training because he was hurt. That takes heart. That takes desire. That takes guts. The guy loves the game and loves this club. That counts for something.

Not to mention, our best periods have often coincided with his best periods. Doesnt matter if he starts or comes off the bench. You know you’re going to get some type of contribution out of him and when coming off the bench. He will never shy away from taking anyone on, can make players look foolish and has the vision to make exemplary passes. He isnt a scorer or a top assister. But he is creative and you know hes always going to try is ass off even when the other 9 outfield players are lacking in that area.

I like him and he shows passion which is more than can be said for others.

Hopefully for all the players an opportunity to rest up and not play competitively has done them all a world of good. I just hope that Lamela can get a good run of injury free football as he is one of our morenintelligent footballers on the pitch who can influence a game. We now have Gio, N'Dombele, Bergwijn and Lamela :)

People always moaning about his injuries do not compute the fact that his never say die attitude is one of the reasons he gets injured its called commitment . If a few of the others that seem to go half cock were as committed as him it would take the pressure off of him and he would not have to go 100% all the time . The players that always gave 100% like Bryan Robson ; Dave Mckay ; to name just two but there are many more but they because of the attitude in games got injured a lot there are many more such fully committed players that suffered a lot of injuries only my opinion of course.

An opinion that is shared by quite a few others including myself.

Problem is the majority of his injuries seem to happen outside of matches. I think he's injured himself in the pre-match warm up at least twice.

I thought today was the quintessential Lamela performance. It completely summed up the why some people love him and others find him infuriating.

He was tenacious, ran his heart out, got on the ball in great positions, retained it under pressure and was easily one of our best players in the first half.

But then his final ball was lacking, he made the wrong decision at critical moments, gave away silly fouls and never did anything truly special.

Some people will always love him for his heart while others will always be irritated by how he so often flatters to deceive.

This is the quintessential Lamela post-game post. And my post is the quintessential pro-Lamela passive aggressive reposte.

But he really was one of the best players out there today, why can’t we just appreciate him as a key member of the squad and let that be that? We were winning when he came off, he drove the team on in the first half, didn’t have a perfect game but no less perfect than any other player out there. Why always such a big hoo ha with Lamela?

I really enjoyed his performance today. He tries to make things happen. I’d rather a player try to influence a game, rather than be a passenger.

It was interesting to see him line up behind Kane. I had been hoping for this for some time.

I felt he did fine. It was a decent outing but far from his best. He gave his all in effort, made some nice runs & retained the ball well, but like @Timberwolf said, his final ball was lacking. But for me, that's the exception. On other days, those balls would have been nailed on.

I just believe that the way we set up, doesn't suit Lamela.
He's more of a front foot player, not one to sit back & have the opposition come at him & the rest of the team.
He'd rather go at them whether he has the ball or not.

BTW, can't believe he wasn't booked for that late tackle on McTominay.
